BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Mrs. Sells owned and operated Sells Furniture with her husband Detro of 76 years on Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia from 1960 until retirement in 1997. She served in a variety of roles for the City of Monrovia and was a Rotary-Ann, working diligently in support of Mr. Sells’ tenure as Rotary President from 1982-83. She was given the Founder’s Award with Detro in 1981.
Before opening their own firm in 1960, Bliss worked for California Furniture Company as bookkeeper, McBratneys in sales and at JC Penney as display artist before starting Sells Furniture. She earned a two-year degree in trade dressmaking after graduating from high school. Today, the degree would be termed as fashion design and she made beautiful clothing and household items for her family throughout her life. She even sewed an enclosed softtop and seat upholstery for Detro’s restored post-war jeep, which we all loved! Bliss was also a prolific painter during her retirement years.
