Elveda Joan Spitz was born in Burress, Nebraska, on August 30, 1928, to Joseph and Bertha Hlina. She grew up as a farm girl in the southeast section of the state. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1946 and married Leo J. Erdkamp on January 25, 1947. Leo died in an accident less than a week before their first anniversary. Elveda married Harold J. Spitz on April 27, 1950, and they soon moved to Southern California, eventually settling in Glendora. In November 2025, Elveda entered hospice care in Redlands, California. She passed away there on May 16, 2026.
Elveda was devoted to her family. With Harold, she raised four boys. They introduced the boys to hunting, fishing and camping. After the children were raised, Elveda and Harold enjoyed travel to Europe, Mexico and Hawaii.
Elveda also enjoyed engaging in a variety of activities with her many friends. She was especially fond of the women’s bowling league of her parish, St. Louise de Marillac. Elveda also looked forward to her monthly card games with another group of women.
On her own, Elveda was a fan of music, particularly that of the Big Band era. When she wasn’t listening to music, she was playing it on her home organ. Reading books was a significant part of her life. After her passing, the family found numerous handwritten and typed pages listing the books she had read.
Elveda was a fan of the Angles baseball team from its very beginning in 1961. She celebrated when the Angels won the world series in 2002. Since then, she was a long suffering but loyal supporter.
Elveda was preceded in death by her husband Harold and her youngest son Jim. She is survived by her other three sons, Terry (Julie), Randy (Suzie) and David (Kim), as well as by seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
