Mater Familias. 

This is a Latin saying that means "Mother of the family" and it is one that Big Grandma (as my children know her) truly exemplifies. 

From the countless stories of her taking care of all her grandchildren told to me by my wife Brittany, to being a living witness to the love and care she had to offer when she came to visit us in Texas and care for our family. Big grandma was a beautiful, kind, and loving soul with a little side of adventure. 

I'll always remember the day she left our apartment and being so worried about her when Brittany was unable to get in contact with her because her phone died. She got home late that night and told us that she had caught the bus all around the city of Dallas and made friends along the way. 

You are forever in our hearts Big Grandma. Thank you for the memories bestowed upon my family.

My deepest condolences to Elvia, and her family at this sad time. I remember Luisa, always very kind to me always in the kitchen, offering us a delicious meal. She was a devoted mother, who loved her children very much!  But my hope is in knowing, that I look forward to a day where there is no more pain, sickness, and death! I love big grandma she was really nice and always gave us money on our birthday. I love you big grandma!

Noah has always been shy and big Grandma always found a way to have him warm up to her.  As you can see she always made him smile.

One memory that I remember with Big Grandma is when Big Grandma and Big Grandpa would come over and play a game were some one would hide a ball and we would have to find it. When we were far Big Grandma would say “cold” and when we were very close she would say “hot,hot.” She would also bring back gifs from when she was at Mexico. One time she brought me back a dog bow because she thought it was a regular bow and she thought it looked cute. I will miss you big grandma.

I’ll always remember my trip with you to Mexico or you scolding Joe saying “ Aye..you no do that!” The rabbit hole of memories you’ve left me with are priceless and I will cherish them forever. Most of all I will cherish the endless love you showed me and my children. 

You were an amazing grandma and I will miss you dearly for you were the epitome of love and that’s exactly what I see when I look at this photo. I love you Ma! Till we meet again.

When I look at this picture I see so many things. It almost makes me feel like I’m Alice in Wonderland, falling down a rabbit hole filled with so many different memories. Some memories make me cry, some make me cringe but most of the time they fill me with joy and make me smile and laugh. This photo is not only the epitome of my childhood but the epitome of who my grandma was. 

  My grandma was a one of a kind person. Some may have known her as the women who put the home into homemaker. Others May remember her as a master chef, a dancing queen, a hairdresser on fire, an upcycling upholster, a chancla yielding ninja, a nurturer, chiona, or as the women “who just didn’t mind her own buisness and spoke up for others weaker than her.” My grandma was all of these things and so much more. She was one of a kind because staying true to herself was her ultimate superpower. 

  Thank you Ma for instilling this superpower in my mom, who in turn instilled it into my sister and I. Your struggles, values, beliefs, teachings and most of all your life, was not taken in vain. You will always be a part of us and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without you. 

  As the years pass, I will continue to look at this picture and fall right back down that rabbit hole of memories I have of you. When I see your smile in this photo it reminds me of the smile I’d see at every single school event  I ever had. The family all gathered together reminds me of how much you loved getting the family together and cooking for us. Seeing all of my cousins reminds me of all the times we’d cram into your van to head to Clifton’s, McDonald’s or Bassett park.

  When I think of your van, I think of how you used to honk your horn at me if you saw me walking down the street with my friends; embarrassing at the time but so funny now. I remember camping out in your van at six flags. I think of all the times I had to translate for you, I remember you showing me how to use my first sewing machine…………

Conocí a la Sra Luisa por medio de Elvia. La recuerdo como una señora muy alegre, muy buena persona, muy muy amable. En las pocas veces que fui de visita con Elvia a su casa, también vi que era una persona muy hospitalaria. Les ofrecía de comer a sus invitados y por cierto cocinaba muy rico. Una mujer muy emprendedora. Siempre tratando de ayudar a sus seres queridos. En sus platicas me platicaba mucho de lo feliz y orgullosa de todos sus nietos y muchas historia de vida muy interesantes.

Se que no hay palabras que puedan aliviar el dolor que sienten en estos momentos por una buena persona como Luisa y que su partida deja un vacío imposible de llenar.

Recuerdo con cariño los momentos compartidos con Luisa cuando Elvia nos llevó a San Francisco y el impacto positivo que tuvo en la vida de quienes le conocimos. Sus recuerdos seguirán iluminando el camino de todos ustedes y su legado perdurará en sus memorias.

El dolor de la perdida es compartido y, en este difícil camino de duelo, no dejen de estar siempre todos juntos para encontrar la fortaleza para superarlo. Eso es algo que a la Sra Luisa le hacia muy muy feliz, saber y ver a toda su familia junta y unida.

My Ma was the most loving person I know. She always made me my favorite Mexican dishes no matter what day it was. If I asked for it she made it, especially when I was pregnant. Some of my favorites were Chile rellenos, sopes, enchiladas, and pambazos. When I was a child I loved helping her cook sopes.
Every birthday she called and sang to me. She called just to make sure I was okay and the last thing she always says before she hangs up is “cuidado mija, I Love You Around The World.”  I’m so thankful she got to see me become a mother to a beautiful baby boy. I wish we had more time with her but I’m glad she knew how happy I was being a mom before she passed. She sacrificed so much for our family and filled our days with so much life and laughter. 
My Ma made sure that everyone was taken care of. She supported us through everything. She came to every major event in our lives. I will forever hold on to these memories.

My grandmas love is one that I will never get back. It was so rare to have someone who cared so much about me like how she did.
She would call me up and just tell me how she loves me.

She would call me at work and ask what I wanted to eat. I would tell her chile rellenos and she would make them for me. 
After work vince and I would stop by on our way home since gmas house was on the way.
We would stop to eat and laugh and talk about our day. I remember one time I walked in the house and our food was served and there were tortillas and drinks next to our meal. All prepared for us. How lucky I was to call you my grandma 💗
She never ever once failed me. She never did not have my back. 

Even though I do not celebrate my birthday, I will miss the most on all my future birthdays a phone call from you singing happy birthday to me. You never forgot my birthday. 

I remember you would call me when you were in Mexico and our time zones were different you would call me soo early and I would be sassy ahaha But i still felt soo loved.

Another memory. One of my favorite videos of Ma is her dancing with Alea. This is when Alea was more sassy ahaha and rarely liked to go to people who were not her mommy or daddy (and Tia 😌)
Randomly during covid we would decide in the middle of the night to go visit Ma at the La Puente home. Vince would call her as we were driving there saying to her if she can make us some food because we are hungry. She would get up from her sleep and start cooking by the time we got there we had eggs and quesadillas ready for us. We would end the night by dancing because Ma loved to see Alea dance! This time Alea opened her arms wanting to dance with my gma 💗 it warms my heart every time I watch this video. 
In her days at the hospital I would show her this video ever time I visited her. She would focus on it form start to finish and I would tell her we would be dancing again soon! 
I miss you ma 💗

I’m Sending my deepest condolences to all of Ma’s family members. I am truly saddened over the passing of Nicolasa. She was a delight to be around with that contagious laugh & was the best grandma. My favorite memory of Nicolasa was a recent one. After Samantha gave birth in the hospital, we all walked out and shared tres leches. As Ma was eating she choked and coughed,  spitting her cake all over my face, we laughed until I had tears in my eyes, I still laugh as I think of it and her. I’m glad to have that memory. I also appreciated how she talked to me and treated me when I told her I was pregnant, she was so supportive and showed loving care to me, it just what I needed becoming a first time mom. It felt like she was my grandma and family in these moments with her. Going back maybe 13 or 14 years ago when I had surgery (before even meeting Ma) she cooked me enchiladas and Rice when I was in the hospital. They were so good and that made me realize that she showed love through food & cooking for others. Another memory I’m remembering now as I think about is her is how natalie and I would trick her when she would call. I would answer and pretend to be Natalie, and while many others could never tell since we had similar voices at the time, Ma always knew I wasn’t Natalie haha. 

I will really miss her and am very sad that her family members are hurting right now during this difficult time. Sending my thoughts and love to you all

This is the hardest thing for me to do. To write a memory about someone who meant the world to me. I knew this day would come but I thought I had another decade or more with her. I would constantly tell my friends and family if my gma ever passed away check on me because I will not be well. She was my best friend. 

I have so many memories with her. The picture above shows our cruise to the Bahamas. Originally we were supposed to go with everyone as a group on the cruise but somehow the cruise could not find my grandmas ticket in their system so they made her stay behind!! After we sailed they find her ticket!! The cruise ship paid for her hotel in Miami while we sailed away. We had fun, but I kept thinking about my gma being left behind.

The cruise ship felt extremely sorry so they gave my gma her ticket for the next available cruise and an extra ticket so she can take someone with her! And she chose me! 💗
We would eat, talk, laugh and swim all day long. One day as I was going to the pool and she was saving a table for us but it immediately got gloomy and the boat was moving back and forth. The boat tipped to one side so much that the water from the pool  was coming out and made me and my gma slip to the side. The chairs pummeled on top of me & Ma kept yelling for me. Finally the ship was upright and we were escorted to our rooms. All night it kept swaying, it was so hard to sleep. That was the scariest memory I have and it so happened to be with my gma.
The next stop we got to was Atlantis! Here my gma snook is onto the hotel property (i don’t think we were supposed to be there) 
Anyways.. we fit right in & you know Ma will make conversation with anyone.. so I was hanging with this little girl around my same age and her dad and my gma were chopping it up. We all got close as friends so the dad pretended to be my dad and got me a wristband so I can go on all the rides. He even got me and Ma food for free and that was my favorite vacation w/ my Ma 💗

My grandmother was a great women.  If anything she was one of the strongest woman I knew.  She was warm and loving. She loved to cook and care for others. As a child I remember sleeping over on a Saturday night just to wake up on Sunday morning to go with Ma to church. It was one of my favorite things to do with her. I learned to pray with her. Even when I got scared when I slept over she would always tell me to speak to Jesus, say a prayer.  She was not a shy woman. She was outspoken and always stood up for others, especially children. It didn’t matter if you were family or a stranger is she saw something wrong and she saw it she speak up unafraid.  Every school event, performance Ma was there.  What meant more to me was that she would show up for my children as well. Every birthday near or far you can guarantee that she would call you singing happy birthday. She remembered her great grandchildren’s birthdays as well. She’d always call.  Ma I’ll always cherish everything you taught me, the trips to McDonald’s, the trips to the park for a free lunch, the night walks as you sang to us, the way you would hold us on your lap as adults, the vacations we went on as kids. I’ll miss your happiness  when we walk into your house saying Reina and hugging us.  I’m forever grateful that god chose you to be my grandmother. God knew we need YOU to be our grandmother.  I miss you and I love you so much. Con mucho Amor  tu Irenesita.

“Ma” the angel of love! 

Ma was never shy or hesitant to show her love. Whether it was through your stomach or her warm nurturing spirit. If there was anyone close to you that you cared for, Ma cared just as much! She killed every definition of a wife, mother, grandmother or friend with ease! 
A true Queen. 

A housewife is one of the most underrated jobs, if done well, it’s permanent with no time off and she easily outperformed herself. Her love went beyond just her husband and kids. She filled her home with good spirits. Any person that visited could feel the overflow of warmth. Family or not, everyone around was treated as such.

Every time I seen her (as far back as my memory goes from childhood into adulthood) she would pull me, hold my head close to hers, ramble a bunch of words in Spanish (that I still have no clue about) and kiss me a thousand times. The only word I picked up on was “precioso” which I always inferred meant precious but regardless of translation her excitement of seeing you and warm energy told it all. Language barriers didn’t matter around Ma because her love was always felt.

My favorite memory of her is every phone call I’d receive on my birthday..it was the immediate singing as soon as you answered that I will miss. Even if I was sleeping and didn’t get a chance to answer she’d leave a voicemail of her singing happy birthday that I’d replay over and over all week and when I would get the chance to call her back, as soon as she answered it was once again, the immediate singing. It always made me and whoever was around me smile and laugh. Her energy was always felt and transferred through the phone.

I’m beyond thankful I got the opportunity to experience such a pure heart. They say angels are never seen but always felt and I believe God handcrafted her specially to spread love and good intentions here on earth and give us the confidence knowing that someone so scarce is waiting for us on the other side. I can’t wait until we meet again🤍

Mamá, gracias por estar siempre ahí para nosotros.  Sé que Sergio y yo nunca podríamos agradecerte lo suficiente por cuidar a nuestras hijas mientras trabajábamos.  Nos tranquilizaste, sabiendo que nuestras niñas estaban a salvo y eran muy queridas. Cuando te enfermastes de distancia, sabíamos que lo correcto era estar ahí para ti.  Aunque tú y yo chocamos cabezas, siempre supimos que había amor entre nosotras. 

Cuando te visité el lunes 18/10/23 no sabía que sería la última vez que te vería viva. Ese día estabas alerta y parecía que todo estaba bien.  Hablé contigo, toqué algunas canciones para ti y mientras te ajustaba el brazo, te miré para verte sonriéndome. 

Le dije a la familia más tarde esa noche que en ese momento, desearía haber tenido una cámara instantánea para tomarte una foto sonriendo. En ese breve momento, mamá, vi un atisbo de la persona que solías ser, y eso me hizo muy feliz. Me fui ese día asegurándote que Elvia estaría allí al día siguiente para visitarte.  

Me consuela ser lal último en estar contigo y verte sonreír por última vez. Quiero creer que ese día estabas preparada para dejarnos; y que tú y yo estábamos en paz el uno con el otro. Te amo y te extraño mamá, espero volver a ver tu sonrisa nuevamente.

Brittany was Delia's firstborn and Ma demonstrated it by helping Brittany when ever she could babysit and her great grandchildren loved her so much and they especially loved how she cooked for them.

My great grandmother was very selfless and she was so sweet.  We had many memories together, but when I think or hear her name I think of whenever she and my great grandfather would come over we would play a game and they would hide money and whoever would find it would keep it.  I love you so much Big Grandma, you will forever have a special place in my heart, Amelia.

Mom, thank you for always being there for us.  I know that Sergio and I could never thank you enough for watching over our girls while we worked.  You put our minds at ease, knowing that our girls were safe and dearly loved. When you got sick thousands of miles away, we knew that the right thing to do, was to be there for you.  Although you and I bumped heads, we always knew that there was love between us. 

When I visited you on Monday 10/18/23 I didn't know that it would be the last time that I would see you alive. On that day you were alert and seemed as if all was good.  I talked to you, I played some songs for you and as I was adjusting your arm, I looked up at you to see you smiling at me. I told the family later that evening that in that moment, I wish I would have had an instant camera to take a picture of you smiling. In that brief moment mom, I saw a glimpse of the person that you used to be, and it made me very happy. I left that day reassuring you that Elvia would be there the next day to visit you.  I take comfort in being the last one to be with you and seeing you smile one last time. I want to believe that on that day, you were prepared to leave us; and that you and I were at peace with each other. Love you and miss you mom, I look forward to seeing your smile again.

Memories like this will forever be in my heart. My mother by my side, is not just the way that you see it here in this picture.  When I think of my mother the word that come to mind is unconditional love.  My mother stuck by our side and loved us unconditionally.  Often times she stood up for us, against my dad who was very strict, always understanding us, always protecting us, and always trying to guide us with her faith. 

My mom was a strong woman, I realized that later in life.  Mom got married at a young age and didn't know how to cook.  She would tell me stories about how when she first got married, she would often burn her food. She wanted to be become a good cook for her family, and eventually that is exactly what she became. Mom wanted to learn how to drive, and she did, driving us back and forth to the movie theater, the skating rink, and sometimes to DTLA to visit family. She was very independent and didn't seem to be afraid of trying new things.  She sold food at soccer games, learned upholstery and became very good at it, doing side jobs.  

I have a love for earrings.  When I first came to L.A. it was without my mom. It seemed like forever without her. When she finally joined my dad, she brought me a pair of happy face earrings.  They were beautiful and shiny.  I wasn't able to wear the earrings, due to being allergic to them. Now every chance I get, I look for earrings, they will always remind me of my mom.

My mom loved music and dancing.  The radio playing while mom cooked was always a staple. Maybe that is why her food was good.  She loved to please her family and often cooked their request, even though there was already food.  What comes to mind is a bistec, when Irene asked her for it, flan for Gus, Pozole for Vince, enchiladas for many of us, her pambazos, chile rellenos and chicharron en chile verde for her brothers. 

There is so much that could be said about her, she will be dearly missed by many.

My Sincere Condolences to the family!  You are all in my prayers 🙏🏾. 

Though I’m not a sibling nor share any biological kinship, I’ve Always affectionately referred to Ma, as “Ma”.  It was not only my way of acknowledging her love, kindness & wisdom, but it’s my way of demonstrating respect.  She is one of the most loving, sincere, passionate, and vocal persons I’ve ever met, aside from my aunt.  If Ma liked you you knew it, and if she didn’t you knew that as well.  She was an original, and she possessed an enormous spirit.   

One day, I hugged her so long she said “I thought you were trying to carry me”; I jokingly conveyed: “I was gonna put you in my car & drive off w/ you.”  She looked at me like I was crazy, and I sort of am, but it was mostly because some humorous lines must be translated, and how I wished I could, but I was limited to Elvia’s translation.  She’s not funny like me though.🙃  

Another day we talked about how some things in Spanish aren’t funny in English as it gets lost in translation.  Readers, you would’ve had to be there😂.  She gave me a look like Rene’ ’ could you 🛑 it pls🥰.  I kissed her and replied “No, Never - I’m gonna love you hold you & squeeze you and when you say stop, I’m gonna say:  “no comprende’.” She said okayyyy. 😘

Ma was also supportive.  She’d lend you a hand with anything she could accommodate you on.  She babysat my grandson for me and I was like Ma, how will you communicate, she said: well, I’ll put the plate in front of him ‘ he’ll know it’s time to eat, I’ll put my hands on my face like this (she demonstrated) for nap time, and we’ll wait for you to pick him up.  I LOVED HER to infinity.  I’m sure all of the family felt her love and support!!  Simply stated she had a spirit bigger than life itself😘😘😘😘

In closing, the Bible tells us in John 5:28-29: “Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all those in the memorial tombs to hear his voice. and come out”.  We anxiously await this🌹🥰🌹

A mother indeed, GMA or as we called her MA was a loving being. Truly a gift from above. She always fed up and loved us. I annoyed her for sure and she said “Ya”  that is ok that is how we played. She loved life and had no teeth, but her smile was pretty. We will miss her and I will do my best to Live life in the best way to honor her and Jah. Te quiero mucho y 1000 veces más! Por ahí nos vemos.

Mother, you grew up in a humble home where you took care of your brothers; got married very young so you did not finish your career because you had to raise a family.  You made so many sacrifices for your children and that is why you lived in the shadow of my father.  My father would not have been the great man he was and accomplished all his goals without you saving money.   You cooked for all five children and cousins that lived with us.   All your life you never lived for yourself, but for others and that made you happy. 
     Mother, no words can ever express how deep my love is for you.  I know I told you so many times that, but now that you are no longer with us; I cannot help to cry and miss you because you where my everything.
     I know you would have wanted to be happy so I will try to live a good life and keep the memories of our last trip to Washington State.  You went along with every whim of mine even though you got tired of looking at another waterfall, another tree, another mountain - yet you never complained.   You were my best traveling partner because you always entertained me with your stories and even your complaints.  I will hold dear every memory we had together in Portland, Cancun, Medellin, Colombia, Florida, Hawaii, and many other places.  
          My only complaint against you is that you were the best cook in the world and that is why I was chubby all my life.  It is okay Mom I have plenty of great memories, therefore I will forgive you for that.  Mother, the love we have for you is unmeasurable because you exuded patience, kindness, immense generosity, and most of all love for your family.  
         All of us children will love you forever and want to welcome you back to Jehovah's new world where there is no more pain or suffering and you will be young again.  "Here I am creating new heavens and new earth; and the former things will not be called to mind, neither will they come up into the heart". (Isa. 65:17).

Ma was such a loving and friendly person. She loves to dance, cooks well, travel, and I still can’t believe this is real. Look forward to seeing her and grandpa and my other grandma in the resurrection. A memory is every Friday she would get me and my sisters ice cream or pizza, she would ask us which one we wanted. I chose pizza, my sisters chose ice cream. In the end as I got older I realized I got pizza and my sisters got pizza and ice cream LOL sometimes she would still get me ice cream. I love you Ma thank you for all that you’ve done ❤️ May Jehovah keep you in his memory

Gracias por los bonitos recuerdos que nos ha dejado. La voy a extrañar pero se que esta en un lugar mejor. Gracias por todas las comidas deliciosas que nos preparo. Nunca se me va olvidar la primera vez que probé sus deliciosas enchiladas cuando invito a Hugo y a mi a su casa. Siempre serán mis favoritas.  La quiero mucho!

Era una mujer que le gustaba mucho convivir con la gente le encantaba celebrar su cumpleaños y disfrutaba mucho viajar con su familia.

A mi mente viene el recuerdo de mi tía en México, a pesar de que ella residía en EE. UU nunca dejo sus raíces, amigos, hermanos que vivían acá. 💖 Disfrutaba viajar de conocer lugares y disfrutar🥰; siempre platicaba de sus nietos con mucho amor💖 los cuales algunas veces acompañaban a sus viajes, siempre ayudando y pensando en muchos de sus familiares de este lado.

#1 Grandma
Grandmother is a very special title to hold. Perhaps the most unique and versatile titles to be honored with. The love they give is pure. It is safe, forgiving, and oh so accepting. Grandmas are everything and everyone. They’re a mom, babysitter, cook, best friend, loyal wife, a confidant, and a second mom to some. Above all, no matter the ask; they will always be there. 
This was my grandmother. Also known as “Ma”. Words can’t describe the relationship that my grandmother and I had. Yet my memories of are time together are nothing but happiness. She understood the type of love I needed. At times I, myself didn’t even know I needed that. For that reason my standards on love are high. 
My Ma was always looking out for me, praying for me. Feeding me, dancing, and singing with me. Tucking me in at night even at my ripe old age. Playing games with me. Constantly teaching, and laughing with me. Her love was endless. Extremely grateful to have her as my grandma. She was truly one of a kind. What I love most about my Ma is that she loved Jesus more than anyone on earth. That was her greatest quality. One of the best souls I’ve known. #1 Grandma is an understatement. Through it all. I thank God for blessing me. Ma you are forever in my heart and mind. I miss you and te quiero mucho!

My dear mom was a devoted mother and wife who took care of everyone else’s needs. I have beautiful fond memories of my mom driving the family station wagon and taking me & my siblings, and our friends to the movies, skating rink, park, and the beach. She was a great cook who truly loved preparing delicious home cooked meals for her family. We will  ALL miss your enchiladas, sopes, pozole, tacos, albondigas, caldos, etc. I will be forever grateful for my mothers genuine love and self sacrifice of watching my children while I went to school. She didn’t pursue her personal goals to work outside the home in order to watch ALL of her grandchildren. Mom, I will miss stopping by to visit you at home and to chat, play cards or dominoes, play with your great grandchildren, assist you cooking, looking at old photos together and reminiscing about the old times, and traveling together. You are a remarkable woman who was truly blessed. You loved life and were an awesome dancer who loved listening & dancing to Cumbia music.  Mom, I will miss you and  think about you often. Love you Mom!!!
