Señora/Abuelita María,
La recordamos a todo momento y solo Diosito sabe lo mucho que la extrañamos. Le hace muchísima falta a Jonathan especialmente. Pero sabemos que nos cuida y está con nosotros. Espero que sienta nuestros abrazos hasta el cielo.

She was so funny too. She would always ask if my mom was treating me nice.  I would tell her no, so that I can see her give my mom a big spanking or “pow pow”.  I knew I could always come to her if my mom started acting crazy. She had my back for sure.  Jk mom, I love you. 

She used to have this vicious German Shepard named Kuma. I remember not being allowed down those back stairs where she would keep him locked behind a gate. I was convinced that if I opened that gate, Kuma would surely eat me alive. So the fact she would go down there and play with him, feed him and care for him proved to me that my sweet little grandma was superhuman. 
 
We will always love you Grandma mom. We will always miss you. Thank you for raising our beautiful mother.

I would like to share a few fond memories I have about my Grandma Mom. 

I didn’t learn her real name until I was about 7 years old. I literally thought her first name was “mom” because I would hear MY mom and all my aunts and uncles call her “mom”. So she became “Grandma Mom”.  It was too late to start calling her Grandma Maria. That name was so fitting because she treated and loved everyone of us like she was our own mother. 

I  absolutely LOVED when she would babysit my sisters and I. I remember every summer we would swim in that plastic pool she had. The concrete underneath the thin plastic would tear up our knees but we didn’t care one bit. After we had enough fun swimming, she would grab the shampoo and give us a quick bath outside. We would dry off and run into the freezing cold air conditioned house. The smell of either sopa or Mac n Cheese would fill my nose. Sometimes eggs con weenies. Once we finished our meal, she would raise our arm up in the air and excitedly say “champion!” 

One day, all the cousins were over at Grandma’s house, Grandma was in her kitchen cooking, and somehow one of the older cousins had convinced Grandma that “Child’s Play” was an appropriate movie for all the kids. I’m sure it didn’t take much convincing with a title like “child’s play”, I mean how bad could it be? All the cousins were either cuddled up on grandma’s big swivel chair or hiding behind it peeking their heads out with one eye closed.  We still might be traumatized to this day, that a small Chucky doll is waiting for us under the bed, but what kid can say they saw a rated R movie at the age of 5?!? Coolest grandma. 

My Grandma Mom had the best smile! She had the unique ability to make you feel loved and cared for just by looking at you. She had kind eyes. Although we couldn’t communicate very well with words, I had no problem understanding the fact she loved me and cared for me. She was able to convey that regardless of our language barrier. 



Coming in from playing outside to the smell of sopa. All of the cousins gathered around the table eating. As each one of us finished, grandma would come over to our spot, raise our hand up, shaking it, and saying "champion!"

Ama, me está costando mucho poner en palabras lo increíble que eras, lo especial que eras para mí y cuánto te voy a extrañar. Esto es extraño porque cuando no podía recordar las palabras correctas para hablarte en el acto, siempre pude encontrar las palabras escritas para expresarme. Me encantaba escribirte cartas porque me decías que apreciabas recibirlas. Siempre me dijiste que te hacían el día mejor.  No necesitabas mucho para hacerte feliz, esa es la clase de persona desinteresada que eras. Viviste para mejorar nuestras vidas y me llena de tanta calidez sabiendo que estabas orgulloso de mí.  Saber que te sentías así por mí me hacía sentir fuerte porque eras muy fuerte. 
Son las pequeñas cosas de ti las que más me parecen destacar. Pequeñas cosas como el olor de sopa. Fuiste la mejor cocinera.  Estoy tan feliz que anoté algunas de sus recetas (albóndigas, sopa de fideo, tortillas, tamales).  Aunque nunca podré hacerlo exactamente como usted, voy a tratar de hacerlo por usted.
Pequeñas cosas como cantar La Cucaracha cuando nos heríamos para dejar de llorar o cuando me arrancabas mis “Band-Aids” contando hasta "dos" en lugar de "tres". Aún recuerdo la primera vez que me hiciste esto. ¡Me sorprendió que me engañaras! Tan sorprendida que no sabía qué hacer, pero tu truco funcionaba, me olvidaba del dolor. Siempre recordaré la mirada traviesa en tus ojos mientras te reías porque sabías que me habías engañado.  Inesperadamente arrancándome los curitas es algo que continuó en mi edad como adulta y todavía me rio cuando me acuerdo en todas las veces que me hiciste caer en tu trampa.

Pequeñas cosas como tus abrazos de oso grande que eran cualquier cosa menos pequeña. Me diste los mejores abrazos, más cálidos, amorosos, fuertes y que me abarcan toda. Sentí todo a través de tus abrazos, y desearía que hubiera una manera de embotellarlos para sentirlos una y otra vez ahora que te has ido. Tus abrazos siempre fueron seguidos por los apretones en mis caderas (fuiste la única persona que dejé hacerme eso) y sosteniendo/apretando/frotando mi mano con tus manos suaves. Voy a extrañar tanto tomar tus manos suaves.
Pequeñas cosas como mostrarme que a los mosquitos y escarabajos no tenía nada que temer, siempre les mostraste quién era la jefa. 😉  Fue cuando supe por primera vez que eras invencible.

Pequeñas cosas como la emoción en tu cara cuando agarrabas una nueva joya para darme. Siempre atesoraré todas sus joyas y las historias que vinieron junto con ellas. Pienso en usted cada vez que las uso. Me siento tan afortunada y honrada hoy como los primeros días que me las regaló.  Su alianza de oro, el rosario de oro que siempre uso para rezar por ti, el hermoso collar de oro con Santa María en él, el collar de plata con Santa María en él que me diste en mi fiesta de compromiso. Las que aprecio son las perlas que su padre le dio cuando tenía 13 años y que me regalaste para mi boda. Me contaste la historia detrás de estas perlas... cómo tu padre sabía cuánto te encantarían, su largo viaje para conseguirlas, y cómo usó el dinero que no tenía para comprarlas solo para ti.  Me dijiste lo especiales que eran para ti. Sentí que por eso no podía aceptarlos, pero pude ver en tus ojos cuánto querías dármelos. Me siento como la chica más afortunada en tener este pedazo de ti. Siempre tuviste las joyas más hermosas y especiales para darme. Le diste y diste y nunca pediste nada a cambio, sólo eras tú.  Había estado pensando durante meses en la joya perfecta para ti. Finalmente la encontré y quería que fuera algo especial así que lo grabé con un mensaje para ti. Estaba tan emocionado cuando llegó en el correo el 14de diciembre. Esta emoción se convirtió rápidamente en devastación al día siguiente cuando descubrí que no podría dártelo de inmediato. Desearía haber sido yo quien te lo diera, pero finalmente te llegó hoy. Lo llevas puesto mientras descansas, y espero que te guste.

Ama, gracias por tu sabiduría, tu humor, tu ternura, tu compasión y todo tu amor. Tu familia era lo más importante para ti, y amabas sin condiciones. La única manera en la vida que nos lastimamos es cuando queremos.  Ama, me enseñaste que este tipo de dolor vale la pena. Te importaba más que la mayoría y amabas más que la mayoría. No importaba cuántas veces sufrieras dificultades, seguías abriéndote, cuidando más– es la única manera en que sabías cómo vivir. No es frecuente en la vida que nos encontramos con alguien tan especial que se quedan contigo para siempre. Eras esa clase de persona para mí. Me siento herida y desconsolada de que ya no estés físicamente aquí, pero pienso en lo que dirías, cómo actuarías, y hago todo lo posible para seguir tu ejemplo.  Realmente te siento conmigo. Cierro los ojos y puedo oír tu voz, tu risa, ver tu sonrisa, y cuando tengo la suerte, puedo sentir tus abrazos.

I remember so clear the time when Jonathan introduced me to his “Mom”. It was one Easter Sunday. I was very nervous but he always spoke so highly of her, and always told me how loving she was that all the nervousness became excitement. Excitement to finally be able to meet the person Jonathan loved so deeply and talked so much about while we were dating. She had the kindest soul, she was the sweetest and most loving person. I always admired her for the immense love she had for her family. She had so much love to give. I always told Jonathan that I felt so loved when she  would hug me every time I saw her. Her hugs were strong felt, they were genuine, they were so sincere. Those hugs I will forever miss...
We were so happy when she came to visit us in San Jose. We had such a special time together. Having her there meant so much to us and I’ll never forget the happiness Jonathan felt that weekend. The day before her birthday we picked up food and spent the day out in the front porch with her. We ate pan dulce for dessert and sang her happy birthday. We will cherish that day forever in our hearts.

Le doy gracias a Dios inmensamente por haberme permitido compartir tantos momentos hermosos y crear memorias  muy especiales con usted todos estos años. Gracias por brindarme tanto cariño, por aceptarme con tanto amor dentro de su hermosa familia. Gracias por todo el amor que siempre le dio a Masey(como le decía a Mason) y a Avery, por siempre quererlos tanto. Siempre fue parte de momentos muy especiales para Jonathan y para mi. Extrañare por siempre los “capuccinos de vainilla” que siempre me daba, las novelas que nos veíamos en el sofá arropados con la cobija eléctrica(por eso a Jonathan le gustan tanto las novelas) y las llamadas en nuestros cumpleaños que siempre nos hacia(aún tengo guardados los mensajes de voz que nos dejaba). Masey y Avery escogieron la estrella más brillante en el cielo y dicen que ahí está, Abuelita María.

I remember one of our first dates was when Christine and I went to pick up Frozen yogurt and take it to grandmama’s house. I didn’t realize at the time but it was a test. I was nervous because I knew how important grandmama was to Christine and I wouldn’t have the ability to communicate with her to try and win her over. We sat there and Christine and Grandmama talked and talked and I sat there and smiled. I followed along for about 5 minutes. Eventually I just watched them share stories, laugh and smile together. Occasionally they would both smile at me and continue talking. Weeks later Christine told me that somewhere in those 2 hours I had passed the test.

I can’t believe I’m writing memories and reflecting on all the millions of conversations and moments we’ve shared. I guess I always figured you were invincible. growing up you helped raise us, until we started school and then even after school auntie would pick us up and we’d hang out until our parents got us. But I find my mind wandering to the moments we collected once I was “old enough” to have my own relationship with you. And boy was it a sweet one. You accompanied me for grandparents day at Alverno and sat through a whole day of my classes while I translated for you and we walked the campus. I would pick you up and would run errands together and I would smile as you hopped in and held onto the passenger handle above the door,  or calling you the night before I would pick you up to see where you wanted to have breakfast, like I didn’t know you were gonna pick ihop. And as my life got busier with my husband and babies I would carve out time to come sit and talk with you. Just us. One of those nights I even told you about how I thought I might be pregnant with our 4th baby (Cori) and you told me how happy I make you and how happy you are that we were back from Texas. You told me how much I reminded you of yourself and how strong I am to be so independent. When I’d get home I’d share with Cesar how good for my soul you are.  Sitting at the dining room table with you Lauren and Amanda is something I never took for granted. We’d meet up and each of us would bring coffee and snacks to share and we’d talk with you until midnight and we had to get home. You would share stories with the 3 of us and we’d get to know you in such a different light. Just this last birthday we were telling you you should write down your story for all of us and we settled on getting you a recorder, at your request. This doesn’t feel real. It hurts. But I know when god called you back he said Hallelujah you’re home. Te amo. I’ll be by to visit you soon and sit in your feet like I use to

Ma, Mi Ama.

Te extraño todo el tiempo.  Eras todo lo bueno en la vida.  Fuerte, valiente, tan divertido, la persona más bella, cariñosa y comprensiva.  Tuve la gran suerte de poder crecer bajo tus alas.  Me enseñaste a ser una buena persona.  Siempre tuviste mi espalda.  Siempre estabas ahí con los brazos abiertos cuando la vida parecía dura.  Siempre tuviste las palabras que necesitaba.  Todos los que te conocieron, amaron todo sobre ti.  A medida que crecía, parecía que no había suficientes cosas que pudiera hacer para mostrarte cuánto te amo.  Visitas aleatorias solo para ver tu cara y escuchar tu voz, llevándote comida que sabía que amabas, llamadas sobre la vida, llevándote a hacer mandados, yendo a desayunar con mi mamá y tratando de convertirlos en eventos de todo el día.  Te quería cerca TODO EL TIEMPO.  Mantendré nuestros hermosos recuerdos juntos en mi corazón para siempre.  Siempre te extrañaré.  Y seguiré siendo niña buena para ti.

Ama, me siento tan afortunada de poder mantener cerca todos los hermosos recuerdos que tú y yo hemos creado juntos. Mi segunda mamá siempre has sido .. has sido mi consuelo, mi calma y mi fuerza y ​​siempre serás. Nuestras caminatas de regreso incluyeron carreras cortas (¡déjame decir que fuiste rápido!), Asegurándote de que el paraguas me diera más sombra que tú. A esos días espontáneos de ir a la tienda de la esquina para comprar un dulce y soda para la novela de las tres. Ama, te caminaré contigo para siempre. Te quiero. Podría seguir y seguir con las historias, pero las guardaré para los momentos en los que me sienta triste y necesite recordarme a mí mismo que estás conmigo en estas historias. Ahora, como adulta, mi relación contigo se ha convertido en algo tan especial. Pude disfrutarte de formas únicas para ti y para mí. Sentí cuánto me amabas y sé que sentiste cuánto te amaba yo. No puedo esperar para contarle a tu bisnieto Elio todas las historias que tú y yo hemos creado. Me llevo todas las lecciones de su vida, todo su amor al próximo capítulo de mi vida de maternidad. Sé que continuarás guiándome desde el paraíso de arriba.

Mom’s Most Enjoyable Memories

Mom’s most enjoyable memories were spending time with the family.  She loved being surrounded by her loved ones.  She had no preference to anyone and enjoyed everyone’s company immensely.  She was strong, wise, caring, optimistic, and always had the perfect words to make you feel better—I admired her strong will and positive attitude towards life.  She energized me every time I spoke to her.  She was my confident, friend, and travel companion.  She loved taking short road trips whenever possible. 

On the day to the hospital, she spoke to me about the times we drove to San Jose to see Jonathan and family and how much pleasure and joy she had on that trip.  She also spoke about the trip to Buellton to see Steven and family (little did I know that it was going to be the last time I would see her). Mom was a mom to Steven and Jonathan and that is how she saw herself because she said they made her feel as a “mom” and that she had always felt their love to be genuine.
