Teresa was born in East Los Angeles, California, to Mary Acosta and Raymond Mendiola, and was lovingly raised by her stepfather, Robert Fernandez.
From a very young age, Teresa displayed a remarkable passion for dance. She became a well-known performer of Ballet Folklórico and traditional Mexican Indigenous dance, earning the affectionate nickname "Teresita." Her love for her culture and the joy she found in dancing remained a cherished part of who she was.
In 1967, Teresa began her life's journey with Gregorio Velasco. Together they built a beautiful family and were blessed with three sons—Gregory, Joseph, and Steven. Over the years, that family grew to include ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Her family was the center of her world, and nothing brought her greater happiness than spending time with those she loved.
Teresa dedicated nearly thirty years to serving her community through the school district, retiring as a teacher. Throughout her career, she chose to work in alternative education, where she found her true calling. She believed deeply in helping students who were facing challenges in life, offering them not only an education but also compassion, encouragement, and hope. She saw potential in every child and worked tirelessly to help them believe in themselves.
One of Teresa's greatest gifts was her ability to listen. She had a gentle spirit that made people feel comfortable enough to share their hearts with her. She possessed a rare combination of kindness, wisdom, and understanding that made others feel truly seen and valued. Her advice was always thoughtful, fair, and given with genuine love.
Teresa lived her life by putting others before herself. She had a forgiving heart, abundant compassion, and an unwavering desire to help those in need. Her warmth, grace, and quiet strength touched countless lives, leaving lasting memories with everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Though she will be deeply missed, Teresa's legacy lives on through the family she loved so dearly, the students whose lives she changed, and the many hearts she touched with her kindness, generosity, and unconditional love.
