February 7, 1942 - December 1, 2022
Mary D. May (Maria Dolores Munoz) passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on December 1, 2022. She was born in Grant County (Central), New Mexico, on February 7, 1942. She was the youngest of 5 children born to Lillian and Ramon Munoz.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert J. May, of Covina, CA, her daughters Michelle (John) VanLaar of Henderson, NV; Marlene (Enrique) Torres of Oceanside, CA; and Marissa (Kevin) Murray of Chino Hills, CA; her seven grandchildren, Michael VanLaar, Bradley VanLaar, Trevor Torres, Kyle Torres, Audrey Murray, Adam Murray, Samuel Murray; her brother, Jesse Munoz; and countless nieces and nephews.
Mary was nine years old when she moved with her family to Los Angeles, CA, in 1951. She attended Belmont High School and soon after graduation began working in downtown LA at the County Council as a secretary. She was picked out of a pool of many qualified secretaries to work for a prestigious law firm as a Legal Secretary. She made many friends there and cherished her long time friendships. It was at this job where she met Robert (Bob) May- the phone man- in 1963. Sparks flew and they were married in June, 1964! They eventually moved to Covina, CA, where they raised their three daughters. They made their house a home and all were welcomed at any time. When Mary was ready to reenter the workforce, she tested with the local school district to be a high school secretary and was the top choice! She worked for the school district for 21 years. This is where she made more of her valued friendships that lasted throughout the years. She truly had a gift for making her loved ones, far and near, feel loved and special with her caring ways. Mary’s most treasured times were when she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren, whom she loved “More than life itself.” She told them this every time they spoke and wrote it in every card she gave them. Her 58 years with Bob was her ultimate loving achievement. They loved each other through thick and thin and her legacy will live on in the stories he tells of her love of family and friends.
Mary’s Celebration of Life will begin with a Rosary and Memorial Mass held at St. Louise de Marillac Church in Covina, CA, on January 21, 2023, at 11:30 am. Reception immediately following.
