We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Maureen “MK” Hayes, who left us on May 2, 2025, at the age of 89 after a courageous four-year battle with dementia, multiple injuries, and a host of other health challenges. Known affectionately as MK to friends and family, she met life's hardships with grace, grit, enduring humor, and a "thank you" for any act of kindness or care.
Born on November 11, 1935, she graduated from high school in Cascade, Iowa. Shortly thereafter, her compassionate spirit and sense of adventure brought her to California. She settled in downtown Los Angeles, where she worked as an X-ray technician and a real estate broker.
Preceded in death by her parents, Basil and Florence; five siblings, Alan, Dick, Patrick, Maurice, and Janie (Joe) Stanton, and her husband, John F. Hayes whom she married in Las Vegas in October 1959. Together, they built a life filled with love, purpose, and resilience. John proudly served as a Los Angeles County Sheriff before launching a legal career as a Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney, where he retired in 1992. Soon thereafter, Maureen's resiliency was evident as she joined John to help him successfully fight several bouts of cancer.
Survivors include her two daughters, Tamara Ann Bruner (John), Teri Lynn Legat, and older sister JoAnne Recker, who carry forward her legacy of compassion, humor, and strength.
Maureen will be remembered as a dedicated wife, a loving mother, and a loyal friend whose laughter and love left a lasting mark on every heart she touched.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society.
