Dear Oma,

I am saddened to see you go, although, at the same time I'm happy that you are now in Heaven. I'm  truly going to miss you, I will miss not seeing you sweeping around your house, our never ending conversation about families or just about anything , I will miss the fruits and snacks you always offer me. Your kindness is immeasurable. Thank you for accepting me into your family and giving me guidance when I needed it the most. I will miss you Oma. By the way, when you're sweeping around up in heaven and you happened to see my mom, please say Hello to her for me.

Dear Pablo and Karin,
What a beautiful example of faith and love Melitta was to all of us. She reminded me so much of my own German mother who passed away 14 years ago. So sitting near her in church always gave me such comfort. I praise God that Melitta's in heaven now, and that we'll be able to be reunited one day.

Oma'Lita,
I can't express how much I appreciate you. I certainly didn't appreciate you enough, either. Even though I moved away and didn't see you much for years, you sent cards, helped my family, and prayed for us every day. I am so glad you called me recently and we got to talk, even though my German is very rusty. Engli-span-German-ish is my favorite anyway. And I will always remember how you would say "Oh-kayyyy, Andrrrreyyyyya..." so many times in our conversations. I assumed that was a closing, like good-bye, but no: you were just gathering your thoughts and then the conversation continued.
This is good-bye, for now, but our conversations will continue again someday. We'll have a lot to catch up on then.

        Few people have the ability to touch the hearts of everyone they meet. With those kind eyes and that sweet smile and the most beautiful, genuinely loving disposition, Melitta instantly became a person that our entirely family loved. Our father cared so much for her and Pablo...they were truly an extension of his family..of our family. It hurts us all so much to know that we've lost another beautiful soul from this world, but we know that now she's resting and enjoying paradise alongside our dad, Dionisio, and our Heavenly Father. I know that she'll remain watching over you and guiding you through each one of your paths. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

To Dad:

This week you lost the love of your life.  On February 16th, you both would have celebrated your 64th wedding anniversary.  Sixty-four years, 5 kids, 8 grandkids with a bonus of a few more honorary grandkids, and 4 great-grandkids with one more on the way.  You and Mom shared a lifetime of Good and Bad and everything in between.

I learned from you both and you set such a wonderful example of how to live life that I can only dream of coming close to that.  I have seen you be strong in so many ways.  Still lifting boards of lumber as if they were made of foam.  Wanting to stop at the shop to "check on things" on your way home from hernia surgery.  Climbing up ladders to trim trees at 87 years old (you would have climbed on top of the patio had we let you).  And now, letting go of your wife so that she can be with God.  That takes strength a completely different type of strength, and you have it. 

In the days that come, there will be more Good times and Bad.  We'll cry and grieve for our loss but also smile as we reminisce and talk about Mom and the many wonderful memories.  I will be praying for you, just like Mom did.  I love you Dad!

To Mom:

I just can't believe that you are not here with us anymore.  Whenever anybody asked your age, the typical response had something to do with how they couldn't believe how active you still were.  You always kept busy with something, whether it was lovingly looking after your plants and flowers, or working at the house to keep things tidy, or doing something that involved an act of kindness for a family member or one of the many, many people to whom you were "Oma."  We thought that you would make it to 100 years old, if not more.

But I can't blame you for wanting to go home to be with Jesus.  Who wouldn't want to pick that over how you had been feeling the last few months?  When you were in the hospital ER just the other day and the staff was asking how you were feeling and you replied that you were tired, they told you that soon you would be in a room and you could get some sleep.  But that is not at all what you meant.  You were trying to tell us all that your soul was tired of being in it's earthly body and that you were ready to let go.

If any person deserves to be in heaven, to be experiencing absolute peace and joy, to be free from discomfort and pain, that person is YOU!  You have always been so kind and loving to everyone!  How many people would offer to make a sandwich or snack for the service technician that comes to your house to fix your cable?  And that's just an example of how you treated "strangers."  For family, friends, and those that you got to know, you gave freely of your time and your love and you always wanted to share with them.  To have someone leave your home empty handed was almost unheard of.  You kept EVERYONE in your prayers.  Everyone! Always! No matter what! Period!

I am going to miss you so much!  I love you Mom!  Please don't stop watching over us from your new home.
