Our father, Rogelio Avalos Vasquez, passed away peacefully the morning of August 6, 2024, at the age of 84. He was surrounded by his family. While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with his loving wife, our mother, Luz Maria Mata Avalos.
Rogelio (affectionately known as Papi, Welo and Chato) will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Lysa Sellers (John), Angie Winfrey (Dave), Roy Avalos (Yadira), Sergio Avalos (Tina), his ten grandchildren, Aaron, Liam, Alyssa, Audrey, Ariana, Aidan, Thalia, Jayden, Jackson, Ava, his brother and four sisters as well as extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francisco and Maria Avalos, his wife, Luz Maria Mata Avalos, his two brothers and one sister.
Rogelio lived a full and happy life. He was a humble man who worked hard to provide for his family, he was a man of great faith, and the “rock” of our family. He was an extraordinary man with extraordinary empathy for his family and friends back home in Michoacan, Mexico. Our father opened his home and helped many come to this country for a better life. He was truly a man of service to others.
He enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, attending Catholic Mass every Sunday, and spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.
If you asked him what his greatest accomplishment in life was, he’d say his grandchildren. His grandchildren were the sparkle in his eyes. He and our mother were smitten with their grandchildren. The were both very present in their children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Family is and was very important to him and our mother.
Though he has left us, our father’s legacy of humility, empathy, selflessness, love and kindness will continue to live on in our hearts. He was a true patriarch, whose presence was a blessing in our lives, and we will forever cherish our memories with him.
Rest in Peace, Papi. You will be deeply missed, and your love will always be with us.
The Avalos family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at San Dimas Community Hospital for the compassionate and skilled care they provided our father throughout his hospital visits and end of life stay.
