Roy was born in Marinette, Wisconsin to Warren and Agnes Johnston, one of 12 children. Roy was the last remaining child to leave this earth.
He grew up on a farm and went to school in McCallister until the 8th grade. He was drafted at the age 18 along with 5 of his brothers. He was sent to Japan by ship during World War ll. It took 30 days to reach Japan. By the time he arrived the war had ended. He stayed in Japan for another year to help rebuild.
His military jobs included rifleman, technical sergeant, auto tech. sergeant. He left the Army at age 20.
He left Wisconsin when his cousin Robert, who was in the Navy in San Diego, asked him to move to California. They lived in a boarding house in San Diego.
Roy Married and had a son in 1952. David passed in 2006.
Roy's first job was at West Coast Exterior, then he went to work at Conrock Cement as a driver.
When his wife passed away Roy took his son and stepson home with him.
Roy met Judith AnnDonche in Joshua Tree, CA. They married on September 4,1971 at the Good Shepard Lutheran Church. They moved to Pasadena and then 2 years later to Azusa, CA where they bought a house. They had two children, Jody Warren and Pamela Jane Johnston.They divorced in 1980and Judy stayed in Azusa and Roy moved to San Dimas. In 1998 Roy moved back to Wisconsin.
In 2004 Roy returned and remarried Judy in 2004 and they settled in San Dimas.
Roy said "Judy is my life" , "I never stopped loving her".
Roy helped raise Judy's daughter Azalea Priscilla Donche and always considered her his daughter.
Roy is survived by wife Judy, son Jody(Missy), and daughter, Pamala(Lorraine) and Azalea.
He also has 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Roy was a member here at St. John for several years. He enjoyed helping Judy from time to time with the cleaning and was always there to help with Braille Envelope Stuffing.
He will be missed by family friends, but is now in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
