He was a retired truck driver for Mason-Dixon.
Mr. Bales was a lifelong member of Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Abby Jewel and Mike Stamper; grandson: Grayson Stamper; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Robert and Patsy Smith, Mary Smith, Leona Oliver, Mabel Cannon, and Johnny and Dixie Smith; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who was his sweetheart since the sixth grade, Ida Bales; his parents, J.O. and Frankie Hankins Bales; and three sisters: Lucille Reaves, Louise Johnston, and Mary Frank Bales.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 pm Sunday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
Following visitation, the funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Abby Cole-Keller and Rev. Jamie Lively officiating.
Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Tim Johnston, Chuck Reaves, Will Chapman, Wilton Chapman, and Bill Smith.
Honorary pallbearers are Paul Boles, Max Bales, Jerry Hankins, Judy Thomas, Katherine Sluder, Barbara Johnston, the Stamper family, Dr. Kenneth Susong and staff, and the visitation team and mobile meals from Greeneville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
