

Born October 10, 1927, in Meridian, MS, he was the son of Maggie and Frank Young Whitfield.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruth Whitfield; three children: Claire Whitfield Tucker, Donna Whitfield and Chuck Whitfield (Sheri); grandchildren: Reece Whitfield Tucker (Elizabeth Ruffin), Trey Whitfield (Leslie) and Briarman Whitfield; a sister, Margaret Wilks; and multiple nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers: Frank Whitfield and Ted Whitfield.
He was drafted into the Army in 1946. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and a lifelong Crimson Tide fan. He was also a graduate of the LSU School of Banking.
Mr. Whitfield began his professional career at Hardin’s Bakery in Meridian, MS. He then became a Mississippi State Bank Examiner. In 1953, he moved to Thomasville, GA, where he became a Vice President of The Bank of Thomas County. In 1969, he moved to Greeneville, where he joined the Greene County Bank and subsequently served as President until his retirement in 1990. In August of 2011, he was inducted into the Tennessee Bankers Association Leaders in Banking Excellence.
He was very involved in multiple local community organizations and charitable outreach programs. A long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Greeneville and a founding director of the YMCA of Greene County. He was Chairman of the Board of Laughlin Memorial Hospital for many years. He also received a Philanthropy Award from the National Society of Fundraising Executives for his lifetime of philanthropic achievements. He was also a founding board member of Laughlin Health Care Foundation.
He attended Asbury United Methodist Church since 1969. He was an avid golfer and loved to work in the yard.
The family will receive friends 4:00-6:00 pm Thursday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home with the memorial service to follow at 6:00 pm in the chapel. Rev. Sharon Bowers will officiate.
