Jakey A. Beets was born March 1, 1940, in Grainger County, Tennessee, to Smith and Bonnie Gose Beets. He passed at his home in Mohawk on July 9, 2026. He married JoAnn Hipshire Beets on December 25, 1960. JoAnn - or Jodie Ann as he called her - predeceased him in 2004. Jakey worked at BASF in Lowland for over 30 years before retiring. He was a skilled goat farmer in retirement and was even more skilled at sitting in his recliner all day “televising.” He was an avid outdoorsman, spending countless hours hunting and fishing with his son, grandkids, great-grandkids, and numerous hunting buddies. He was a member of Sunrise Baptist Church in Bulls Gap and attended Highland Baptist Church in Whitesburg as long as his health allowed.
Jakey was the head of a large and close-knit family. His kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids gathered at his home every Sunday for dinner. Jakey and JoAnn loved traveling, visiting 49 states together, and enjoyed sharing their love of traveling with their extended family as well. He had lots of wisdom to share with his family and others in the form of short poems in cards and on any paper he could find laying around. He had a quick sense of humor and a propensity to share exactly what he was thinking. He was proud of his extensive collection of tupperware (Country Crock and Cool Whip containers) to store his favorite meal: reruns. He had a way with words, made-up or otherwise. He wasn’t a man to express his feelings but was sure to show his love to his family in other ways.
In addition to his wife and parents, Jakey was predeceased by his son, Randy Beets; step-mom and step-dad Jackie and Bob Worley; special sister- and brother-in-law Jean and Ellis Blanken.
He is survived by daughters and son-in-law: Sandy Beets and Kandi (Mike) Jackson; daughter-in-law Pam Beets; grandchildren: Dustin (Hollie) Toth, Jacob Harmon, Jordy (Cheyenne) Harmon, Kandra Harmon, Paula (Bronson) Knight, Garren (Katie) Jackson, and Sarah (Jordy) Barnette; great-grandchildren: Samantha, Xavier, and Alexander Toth, Gunner, Kemper, and Stetson Harmon, Layton and Hallie Knight, and Adalyn Jackson; brothers: Terry (Angie) and Tracy Beets; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the staff of Amedisys Hospice of Greeneville and the caregivers who stayed with Jakey and supported the family.
Visitation will be 2-4 pm Sunday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home in Greeneville. The service will follow at 4:00 pm in the funeral home chapel.
