Johannes S. (Steve) van der Merwe, age 96, passed away on June 7, 2026, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was born on August 25, 1929, in Waterberg, South Africa, the son of Lukas and Susarah van der Merwe.
Steve’s early life was marked by great hardship. At the age of five, he lost his mother after she was poisoned by a native, and from a young age he learned to defend and provide for himself. Through determination, perseverance, hard work, and God’s blessings he built a successful life. He worked first as an asbestos miner and later as a gold miner, eventually becoming an instructor in the gold mine training schools.
From 1963 until 1997, Steve devoted himself to farming. He loved cattle and became a highly respected and successful farmer. Steve was also a devoted churchman who loved the Lord Jesus Christ. He served as a deacon and later as an elder in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa and faithfully raised his children in the fear and admonition of the Lord Jesus Christ. Throughout his life, he sought opportunities to serve both his church and his community.
At the age of 67, Steve immigrated with his wife to the United States to join his son and family in Greeneville, Tennessee, where he spent the final 29 years of his life. Steve was a faithful charter member of Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, Steve was preceded in death by his wife, Catherina Magdalena Elizabeth Vos, and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his two sons, Carel V. van der Merwe of Greeneville, Tennessee, and Lukas C. van der Merwe of Eerste Rivier, South Africa; five grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Providence Presbyterian Church (BPC) Cemetery at 2165 Happy Valley Rd, Limestone, Tennessee.
