She was a native of Washington County but had worked and lived in Greene County almost all of her adult life.
Mrs. Ensor was a widely known educator and administrator for the Greene County School system, having served at Camp Creek, Doak, and Mosheim Schools. In 1995, she was recognized as Educator of the Year for the Greene County School System. Retiring from the school system in 1995, she was appointed to the school board by the county commission and was re-elected for two additional terms from 1994-2004, serving as Chairman of the Greene County School Board for two years. Lena reached Level 5 Boardsmanship, which is the highest level of leadership for the board members. She received a BS Degree, Master’s Degree and an Ed. S. Degree from ETSU. She was a Career Level III Principal.
Lena loved her church family. She was an active member of Tusculum Baptist Church as long as health permitted, even teaching her Sunday School Class half-time even in her later years.
Survivors include: daughter, Teresa (Tim) Taylor; grandchildren: Misty (Stacy) Brown, Travis (Brandy) Honeycutt, Emily (Michael) Cable; great grandchildren: Avery Armstrong, Ali Armstrong, McKinley Honeycutt, Allie Brooke Cable, and Rylan Cable; step great grandchildren: Corbin Brown and Braylin Brown; brother, Will D. Whaley; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Lou Elswich Whaley; first husband, Wayne T. Honeycutt, Sr.; second husband, William B. Ensor, Sr.; son, Tommy Honeycutt; daughter, Alice Kay Honeycutt; brothers: Freddie Lee Whaley, Lewis Whaley, Paul Whaley, Jr., Carlos Whaley; sisters: June King and Geneva Whaley; nephew, Davy Whaley.
Special thanks to all who made her life complete, including the staffs at all Greene County Schools, especially Camp Creek, Mosheim, Doak, Chuckey Doak and Chuckey.
The last few years, Morning Pointe took special care of her. In addition, thanks to Summit Medical Group and Dr. Carla Nickle. Amedysis and Amedisys Hospice provided care that sustained her.
There will be a private family graveside service and no formal visitation.
