

He was owner and operator of Bales Trucking Company, transporting milk from farms to Kraft Foods and Dairyman Inc. and was also a dairy farmer. He was a negotiator for heavy equipment operations.
Mr. Bales was a member of Mosheim Central United Methodist Church and was a U. S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years: Dr. Joyce Ford Bales; a son: Max Miller Bales II of Greeneville; mother-in-law: Lillie Davidson Ford; sister-in-law: Betty Bales; other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Glenn and Martha Ford, Doyle Ford, Sandra and Ronnie Morgan; nieces and nephews: Cindy Bales, Chris Bales, James Ray “Chip” Scarce, Amanda and Tony Yost, Eddie and Karen Ford, Mark and Kelly Ford, Lester Ford, Geoffrey Ford, Eric and Kelly Jeffers; great nieces and great nephews: Natalie Ford, Leah Ford, Chole Ford, Eric Allen Jeffers, J. C. Bales and Lindsey Bales.
He was the son of the late William Fred and Kathleen Miller Bales and was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Scarce; two brothers, Jim and George Bales; and his father-in-law, Rufus Carl Ford.
The family will receive friends 4 – 7 pm Wednesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow at 7 pm in the funeral home chapel. Rev. Richard Long and Rev. Norman Wilhoit will officiate.
Interment will be 11 am Thursday at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Mosheim.The Greene County Honor Guard and the Tennessee National Guard will conduct a military graveside service. Family and friends are asked to meet at 10 am Thursday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Shorty Harmon, Mell Malone, Glenn Ford, Bill Pope, Charles Ellenburg, Jeff Cansler, and Guy Jones.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Hugh Wells, Dr. Maynard Austin, Chris Bales, James Ray Scarce, Steve Cansler, and Bobby Broyles.
