After graduating from St. James High School in 1959, he left for a career in the US Navy, retiring as a Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer with the USMC in Viet Nam during the TET Offensive. Following retirement from the Navy, he also worked and retired from the United States Postal Service and as a farmer.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Suzanne (Buckley) Neas; a son Michael Neas, LCDR USN RET and daughter in law Julie (Nielsen) Neas of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter Melodie Neas Ottinger and son-in-law Aaron of Greeneville; four grandsons and families, Michael and Chelsey of Smyrna, Andrew and Tabitha of Cripple Creek, Colorado, Joshua of Knoxville, and Conner of Salt Lake City, Utah; one granddaughter, Anna K. Ottinger of Greeneville and one great grandson, Maddox Neas of Smyrna; a niece Susan Neas Hankins of Greeneville and a nephew, Gary Nutter of Columbus, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Nancy Buckley, Mary Lou Evans and Linda Nutter of Columbus,Ohio; as well as various Fillers and Neas family cousins and close family/friends, Kim and Teresa Neas and Dunk and Barbara Neas.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin D. Neas and a brother Albert H. Neas (Judy) of Greeneville and Fillers and Neas aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Friday, from 3 – 7 pm at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 10 am in St James Cemetery with the Navy Chaplain officiating. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:45 am for the service.
Pallbearers are Lanny Neas, David Love, Robert Meadows, Matt Neas, Kenan Wilhoit, Daniel Walters and Kim Neas.
