
He was a former marketing and technology manager of Magnavox and its affiliated companies.
Culbertson was founder and executive director of Handicaps Unlimited of Tennessee. Under his leadership, the advocacy group built East Tennessee’s first fully handicapped accessible playground in Tusculum and taught the state’s first CPR classes specifically for individuals with disabilities.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville-Greene County and served on the organization’s board of directors for several years. He was awarded the club’s Extra Mile Award in 1999.
In 2000, he received the Blanche W. Grady Community Service Award from the Laughlin Healthcare Foundation for his work with the handicapped and the Boys & Girls Club. He designed funding from an accompanying grant to help provide free dental care to individuals with low incomes.
Culbertson was a member of several State of Tennessee boards of directors in the area of human rights, the Laughlin Memorial Hospital board and Reformation Lutheran Church.
He received commendations from two Tennessee governors, Ned McWherter and Don Sundquist, for “outstanding service in the best interests and in the highest tradition of the State of Tennessee.”
Culbertson was named the Tennessee Jaycees Outstanding Young Tennessean in 1998.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years: Vicki Culbertson; sister: Carolyn Culbertson of Bristol; one brother and sister-in-law: Robert and Brenda Culbertson of Bristol; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Bob and Virginia Sheldon of Newport; four aunts: Mattie Fleenor, Ethyl Newton, and Grace Payne all of Bristol and Dorothy Cardwell of Forrest, Va.; daughter: Angel Hall of Bristol; and three stepbrothers-in-law: Pat Sheldon of Newport, Scott Sheldon of Burlington, N.C., and Christopher Sheldon of Langley Air Force Base and Virginia Beach.
He was the son of the late Robert Tyre “Buddy” and Hazel Culbertson of Bristol and was preceded in death by a son: Joey Culbertson.
The body will remain at Kiser – Rose Hill Funeral Home until time for services. The family will receive friends on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Reformation Lutheran Church with interment to follow at GreeneLawn Memory Gardens. Pastor Rick Ohsiek will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Drew Bishop, David Burroughs, Brian Cutshall, Steve Neal, Adam Roark, Noah Roark, Pat Sheldon and Scott Sheldon.
