

He was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 31,1927, the youngest of ten children
born to Adolph and Helen Opanowicz. He was married to Patricia L. Opanowicz on
January 20, 1951.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia L. Opanowicz, daughter Marcia E. Kossak, and son-in-law Austin S. Landry.
He is survived by two daughters, Tina Landry of Pelham, Alabama, Judith Potter (Randy)
of Monticello, Minnesota and son-in-law Robert Kossak of Walker, Minnesota.
He also leaves seven grandchildren, Thomas Landry (Kristie), Patricia Johnson (Jason),
Sarah Kossak-Gupta (Sounak), Laura Wood (Michael), Amanda Ore (Justin),
Andrea Richason (Andrew), Randolph ‘RJ’ Potter (Brittney) and nine great-grandchildren.
After high school, he enlisted in the Marines for a short time before being Honorably Discharged. He then began his educational path which set him up for his career in Project Management with Chrysler Corporation, specifically in the Space Division. That was
followed by the Defense Division with General Dynamics, where he ended his career
in 1987 and retired.
He enjoyed spending his time with family, golfing, traveling, reading, journaling and
researching genealogy. He was also a devoted and faithful member of the
Catholic Church throughout his lifetime.
Funeral arrangements will be held at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, visitation Friday, May 22 from 3-7 p.m., Funeral Mass from 10:00-11:00 a.m.
on Saturday, May 23 at St. Mary, Our Lady Queen of Families, Center Line, Michigan.
Burial will follow immediately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit, Michigan.
