Caleb was a caring husband to Amy (nee Hatherley) who, for over 60 years, was the love of his life. He was a devoted and supportive father to his son Caleb J Hayhoe Jr (Nataliya Adrienko) and his daughter Janette L Hayhoe (John Livernois). As a grandfather to four, Amy Binning, Cecily Binning, Caleb J Hayhoe III and Luke Hayhoe, “Grampa-Boo” or “G-boo” was deeply involved and adored by all. In the last five years he was blessed with great grandchildren, Adeline and Autumn (Amy and Will) who brought him much joy.
Born in Toronto, the eldest son of George Hayhoe and Louise (nee Clarke), he was predeceased by his eldest sister Ann and is survived by siblings Mary Ellen and Edward. Caleb grew up in Toronto’s High Park area, part of a large, close knit Christian family.
Caleb and his vivacious wife Amy lived a very active social life and had a wide range of close friends in Canada and globally. While residing for several decades in Rosedale, Toronto they attended Little Trinity Church and greatly valued the community there. To all friends and colleagues who interacted with Caleb, the overwhelming impression was of a gentleman who embodied kindness, decency and good humour. He was always willing to offer help or advice and smiled easily and often.
Caleb graduated from the University of Toronto (BA) and subsequently attended Osgoode Hall Law School, being called to the Bar in 1964. Opting not to join the family business (RB Hayhoe Foods / Flowerdale Tea), he pursued a career in law, worked to become a partner with Tilley Carson and Finlay and later joined Baker McKenzie as an international partner. His career culminated with a final adventure as Managing Partner of the Russia office in the tumultuous 1990s.
Being well travelled and an avid reader, Caleb was both interested and interesting. This curiosity and love of discovery took Caleb and Amy to many places including frequent visits to their son’s family home in Hong Kong and their daughter’s place in France. Caleb was easy company, an informed and engaged communicator. He shared Amy’s interest in creating a beautiful home and never shied away from hard work, honing his large range of DIY skills. His greatest joy was reserved for the simple pleasures with family…working together outside at the cottage or a picnic featuring Amy’s (Nama’s) stellar blueberry pie aboard his stubborn old wooden boat “Putt Putt”.
Caleb was a low key, humble person but his input was always thoughtful and substantive. His faith was very important to him, and he lived it by example. He gave his time and talents to numerous Christian and secular charities in Canada and sat on several boards including that of the Silvercrest Foundation.
The family would like to thank the caring and professional staff at Riverside Glen in Guelph where Caleb was cared for with kindness and genuine fondness. Our entire family would also like to thank Gisele Milliorini who has been a truly exceptional caregiver helping Caleb daily in recent years with her patience, skill and love. We can never thank her enough!
