Born in Acton, Ontario, on November 18, 1933, Jane’s life was rooted in a deep love for learning, family, and community. She attended Acton Public School and Acton High School before moving to Toronto to pursue a two-year course in Early Childhood Education at the Ryerson Institute of Technology. After graduation, she worked for three years with the Department of Public Welfare in Toronto’s public day care system, helping to shape the lives of young children with care and dedication.
Jane’s passion for teaching led her to further her education at Toronto Normal School, where she received her teacher training. She spent the next 34 years enriching young minds in public schools across Metropolitan Toronto, particularly in the primary and kindergarten divisions in North York. During this time, she continued her own education, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto through evening and summer courses.
Following her retirement, Jane embraced a life full of creativity, curiosity, and connection. She was an enthusiastic creator of miniatures, gardener and a talented musician who played both the baritone and clarinet in the Acton Citizens Band, conducted by her brother George. She explored her family history through genealogy, traveled widely, and cherished time spent at Rondeau—the beloved cottage she co-owned with her sister and brother.
Jane is survived by her loving sister Shirley and her nieces and nephews: Mark and Sharon, Paul and Alison, Catherine and Keith, Carolyn and Tom. She also leaves behind great-nieces and great-nephews: Brendan and Candace, Jordan and Sophie, Laura, Sarah, and Luke. Jane was predeceased by her parents, Hilton and Winifred Elliott; her brother George; her brother-in-law Jim; and her nephew Steven and lifelong friend Joan Hoz.
A private family service will be held to celebrate Jane’s life.
