It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. John Murray Millman - our beloved dad, Kathy's cherished husband, loving Bumpa to ten grandchildren, and loyal friend to many. John passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on October 21, 2025.
Born May 31, 1942, in Hamilton, Ontario, John was the son of the late John A. Millman and Dorothy (née Holden). John's beloved wife, Kathy, passed away on November 1, 2024, after 56 years of beautiful marriage - a loss he felt and missed deeply every day. John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his four children, David (Maureen), Kate (Robert Dowhan), Jonathan (Erin), and Robert (Marissa); as well as ten dear grandchildren: Bobby, Lily, and Eloise (Kate); Pippa, Emmie, and Peter (Jonathan); and Abigail, Holden, Eleanor and Franklin (Robert). John is also survived by his brother, Bill, and wife, Gwen of Parksville, British Columbia. He was profoundly influenced by two men who predeceased him: his uncle, John Holden of Collingwood, Ontario, and Mr. Frank Leahy of London, Ontario. John met the love of his life, Kathy, when she was working as a physiotherapist during his fourth year of medical school. He was immediately smitten by her beauty, empathy, and love of children. As he often said, "I knew the minute I saw her that I would marry her." Together, John and Kathy built a life centered on love, family, and service to others. Family was their greatest joy and focus, with John often saying his proudest achievement was his family. John graduated in Medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1968 and completed postgraduate training in Family Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton. He went on to establish a family practice in Guelph, serving the community for over 28 years. He later founded and led WellServe Health Care Management, providing occupational health services to industries across Guelph, Toronto, Hamilton, and Kitchener for more than 35 years. John also served as Corporate Medical Director for General Electric Canada for over 25 years and as Chief Medical Officer for the Toronto Police Service for 18 years. He dedicated his career to improving the physical and emotional well-being of people in the workplace. John valued hard work, honesty, close friendships, and generosity of spirit. He loved his family above all else, but also found great joy in the simple pleasures of life at Corwhin Farm, summers in Southampton, Ontario, and winters in Captiva, Florida, and Victoria, British Columbia. A "hobby farmer" at heart, John happily spent hours on the tractor cutting grass, planting daffodil bulbs, or tending to the gardens. He also maintained a lifelong love of music (in particular the piano) and classic automobiles. His lack of athletic prowess was his greatest frustration in life, but it never limited his love for the Blue Jays or Maple Leafs. John lived each day to the fullest - filling rooms with laughter and sharing stories of past adventures. He spent every day doing what he loved and was rewarded with a rich and fulfilling life. He is now eternally happy, reunited with Kathy once again.
To celebrate John's life, a service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, Elora, Ontario, at two o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, November 26th, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in John's memory to the Children's Aid Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated.
"I tell you most solemnly, you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn to Joy. For I shall see you again, and your hearts will be full of joy, and that joy no one shall take from you" - John 16:20 and 22
