Community service was important to Joe. He was an active fundraiser and committee member for successful initiatives such as capital campaigns for St. Joseph’s and Guelph General hospitals, and the River Run Centre. Joe was passionate about his 57-years of membership in the Rotary Club of Guelph, and spoke proudly of Rotary’s achievements through the Polio Plus Campaign, which helped to eradicate polio around the world. He valued fellowship a great deal and enjoyed his weekly Wednesday lunches with the ROMEO luncheon club. Joe was also an avid golfer and was particularly pleased with his “hole-in-one” on the ninth hole at Cutten Fields on July 5th, 2007.
He was the founder and owner of Silcofab Limited, which he started in 1960 on York Road in Guelph. Joe was a skilled Tool and Die Maker, and he used those skills to build a very successful business which processed Silicone Rubber for customers in the Appliance and Aerospace Industries. He played a significant role in 1965 in the development of an expandable Silicone boot that was used to keep the antenna of NASA’s Gemini spacecraft dry and functional during splash down. He was respected by his customers for his honesty, technical skills, and his genuine interest in being of service to them. He carried this positive attitude over to his personal relationships and always had a smile and a kind word when he met you.
Joe led by example. His children and grandchildren have been greatly influenced by his many accomplishments. He has provided guidance to his children and grandchildren on how to live a successful and meaningful life.
