Novemeber 21, 1959 – March 24, 2026
It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the unexpected death of Michael Patrick O’Brien, fondly known as “Obee,” on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at his home in Florida. Mike was the beloved partner and best friend of Sarah Watson, and a devoted father to Racheland Claire (Bailey), a proud stepfather to Jamie Voisin (Jake) and fondly remembered by his former wife, Jennifer O’Brien. He will be deeply missed by his brother Tom, remembered by his nieces, nephews, and will be dearly missed by his sister‑in‑law Jennifer. Mike was predeceased by his parents Jack and Irma O’Brien, his sister‑in‑law Lainey (2019), and his brother Dan (2024).
Mike founded O’Brien Fabrications Ltd. in July 1989 and built it into a successful company. Earlier in his career, he worked at Hammond’s, where he earned a reputation as someone you could always count on. He retired in January 2022 and spent his winters in Sebring, Florida with Sarah, enjoying a well‑earned slower pace. What truly defined Mike was the way he lived. He had an easy warmth and a great sense of humor, always ready with a joke or story, and never one to take life too seriously. He had a way of making people feel welcome and valued, whether you had known him for years or had just met him.
If you were a friend of Mike’s, you knew you could always count on him. He was a loyal, lifelong friend to many from the Albion baseball team and their families, a familiar face at the Ariss Valley Wednesday night golf league, and someone who made friends wherever he went.
Mike loved the outdoors and the simple joy of spending time with good people—whether it be Muskoka boat rides, snowmobiling adventures, golf leagues and Sundays watching NASCAR. Sebring and Pike Lake were a special place for both Mike and Sarah. They loved the time spent with many friends on and off the golf course, where both were considered a force to be reckoned with.
They always had the “Welcome Mat” out for anyone who wanted to stop by the “Command Centre”. Mike always looked forward to his annual fishing trip, never missing one with friends and was always ready to lend a hand—fixing cars or boats, building decks, or simply showing up for anyone who needed him. Mike will be remembered for his warmth, loyalty, and the joy he brought to those around him. Mike’s zest for life made ordinary moments feel special, and his impact will be felt for years to come. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Friends will be received at Gilbert-McIntyre Funeral Home - Hart Chapel, 1099 Gordon Street, Guelph, on Monday April 13, 2026, Visitation 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon; directly followed by a memorial service. A reception will be held at 1:00 - Victoria Park East Golf Club, 1096 Victoria Rd. South, Guelph.
