With heavy hearts we announce that Alvina Rosalie Ryan (Hanans), known to friends and family as Viney, passed away on July 7, 2020, at the age of 85. She joins her loving husband of 37 years, Harold “Dick” Ryan, and her beloved daughter, Anna Gallivan, son-in-law Brian Pople in heaven.
Born in Halifax, NS, Viney spent her married life in Lower Prospect, surrounded by friends, family, and neighbours. She was an accomplished homemaker and loved to care for others with home-cooked meals. Christmas was the highlight of every year and she was well known for her great skill at baking and decorating. Viney had a wonderful sense of humor and never took life too seriously. She loved to laugh and appreciated a good story or joke - especially when it came in the form of an action movie. She collected china and dishware, and never saw a floral print she didn’t like. She also loved children and animals, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the apples of her eye.
Viney will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lois Pople, Joanne (Mark) Scott, and Sandi (Tim) Slaunwhite; son-in-law, Jack Gallivan; siblings, Helena (Mike) Connors, Gwen Richardson, Wanda (Rick) Neave, and Darryl Keddy; grandchildren, Chris Gallivan and Ben (Bryony) Gallivan, Jamie (Tanya) Pople and Stacy Hudson (Keith Croucher), Nicole Slaunwhite and Leslie Slaunwhite (James Anderson), and Carson Scott and Spencer (Carmen Fitzpatrick) Scott; and five great-grandchildren, Molly, Lily & Juniper Gallivan, Sophie Pople, and Austin Groucher. She was predeceased by her mother, Effie, and siblings, Loretta Hemlow, Margie Gallant, Linda Smith, George (Buddy) Hanans, Robert Hanans, and Alan Hanans. Viney will also be remembered forever by her many extended family members and dear friends.
Viney’s family is grateful to the staff at the VG hospital for their compassion and care in her last days, especially to nurses Samantha (Sam) & Connor and to her family doctors, Dr. Harris Crooks and Dr. Jeni Moon.
A Catholic service will be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home in 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax on July 14, 2020 at 2 pm (masks preferred). In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Canadian Cancer Society in her memory.
