O’Toole, Ann Elizabeth(Betty), age 90 of Halifax passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on December 26 in the Sagewood Nursing Home. Born August, 1924 in Baddeck, NS of parents Jack O’Toole and Mary Ann O’Toole. Betty graduated from Maritime College of Pharmacy in 1944. In 1950 she joined Camp Hill Hospital and in 1959 became head of the Pharmacy Department. In 1978 she became Assistant Executive Director of patient services and held that position upon her retirement in 1986. At Camp Hill she oversaw the development of the unit dose drug system and the drug information service. She supported the implementation of the Provincial Drug Information Service and served as chairman of the Drug Information Advisory Committee. She served as teaching assistant at the College of Pharmacy from 1965 to 1972 and as special lecturer from 1972 to 1978. In 1972 she initiated the first Pharmacy Residency Program in the Maritime Provinces. From 1965 to 1976 she was a member of the refresher course committee sponsored by the College of Pharmacy. In 1985 she authored a major report on present and future needs for continuing education in the Maritime provinces. In 1972 Betty received the Winthrop Award and in 1974 The Ortho Award from the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacies. In 1976 she received the Meritorious Service Award from the Canadian Pharmaceutical Society and from the Nova Scotia Pharmaceutical Society. In 1977 she was recipient of the Merit Award from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. She was alumnus of the year for the College of Pharmacy in 2006 and was an honourary member of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists. In her early years she was invited to be a member of the Young Ladies of Baddeck Club, founded by Mabel Bell. The club, now Graham Bell Club is believed to be the oldest continuous operating women’s club in Canada. She is survived by her sister-in-law Rita O’Toole and several nieces and nephews in the Halifax and Chicago areas. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Patsy and Sheila and brothers Ron and Kevin. Visitation will be held in JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr. B3S 0E1(902-455-0531) on Monday, December 29, 2014 from 7-9pm. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 10:30am in Saint Benedict Parish. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
