

Smith (Butts), Anne Marie – 78, Halifax, passed away suddenly and peacefully at home on Saturday, March 17th, 2012. Born in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of the late Richard “Dick” and Mona (MacGillivary) Butts. Anne Marie worked at the CNR until she became a stay-at-home mom for her four children. She then returned to the workforce and served as Parish Secretary at Saint Agnes Parish, Mumford Road, Halifax until her retirement. She was a past President and Charter Member of the Catholic Women’s League of Saint Michael’s Parish in Spryfield, and served on the Executive of the Provincial Catholic Women’s League. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Donald; son, Most Rev. Richard Smith, Archbishop of Edmonton; daughter, Monica Loye (Paul); son, Paul Smith (Susan) and daughter, Clare Young (James); grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Benjamin, Hannah and Luke. She was predeceased by her sister, Joan in infancy. Visitation in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax today, March 20th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral mass in Saint Michael’s Parish, 14 Saint Michael’s Ave., Spryfield on Wednesday, March 21st at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne Marie’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Society or the SPCA, Halifax.
