Arthur Allen (Art) Flynn, Halifax, NS – It is with great sadness we announce the death of Art Flynn who passed away at the age of 94 in the QEII on April 3, 2024 following a brief illness. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (nee Thorne, formerly Corning) Edwards; 10 children: Michael (Patti Stuewe), Dartmouth; Christine (Doug) Power, East Dalhousie; Mary-Lou (Ed) Donnelly, Halifax; Mark (Alison), South Rawdon; Janie (John) McCall, Calgary, AB; Peggy Flynn (Abder Sahouli), Gatineau, QC; Carol (Peter) Storms, Aurora, ON; Derek (Anne Charlton), St. Margarets Bay; Kevin (Oana Stanescu), Bucharest, RO; Paula Flynn (Robert Boudreau), Bedford; 23 grandchildren: Matthew (Emily) Flynn, Laura Flynn (Dave Hickey); Erin Clarke, Jonathan Power; Laura (Ben) Prince, Stephanie (Sam) Barnhart, Shannon (James) Kenny, Teddy (Lindsay McFarland) Donnelly; Douglas (JennyLynn) Flynn, Jennifer Flynn (Cale Wadden); Kate, Lisa and Rachel McCall; Myriem, Malek and Anissa Sahouli; Andrew Storms, Sarah (Corey) Kerr; Adam (Danielle) Flynn, Merrill and Maggie Flynn; David and Bradley Dean; and18 great-grandchildren: Nora and Rose Flynn; Max, Tyler and Charlotte Hickey; Dylan, Mason and Roman Clarke; Maddox Power; Adalyn and Jacob Prince; Callie, Harper and Cora Barnhart; William Kenny; Brayden and Hartlen Flynn; Reign Storms; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Halifax on October 9, 1929, Art was the son of the late Kathleen (Meagher) and Arthur Flynn. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, M. Patricia (Mielke) Flynn, his brothers Kenny, Harold, Clyde and Pat, sisters Mary Lambert and Kathleen Flynn. A lifelong resident of Halifax, Art attended Oxford Street School, St. Patrick’s High School and St. Mary’s University. He started his working career with Westinghouse before opening his own manufacturer rep. agencies, Mechanical & Electrical Sales and Chebucto Lighting.
Art believed strongly in supporting his community, serving in many capacities such as President of the Amateur Athletics Association at St. Mary’s College and on the Board of Governors of St. Mary’s University, Chairman of the Halifax Forum Commission, Board member of the Metro Centre (now Scotiabank Centre) and the Halifax School Board. He was elected to Halifax City Council from 1980 – 91, serving as Deputy Mayor from1985-86. He volunteered in many capacities at St. Agnes Church and Our Lady of Perpetual Help including as a facilitator for multiple “Marriage Encounter” sessions.
Art was an avid athlete throughout his youth, playing both hockey and football at St. Patrick’s High School, St. Mary’s University and in Seniors leagues. When he retired from active play, he remained deeply involved in hockey for the next 30 years, refereeing in University, Junior, Senior and Suburban leagues. He coached several hockey teams including the St. Mary’s High School team and the Hartlen Rovers Bantam and Midget teams, winning provincial championships with both. Art was a founding member of Midget AAA provincial hockey league and first coach of the Halifax McDonalds. He also coached Little League baseball, officiated at Halifax Trojans swim meets, he curled, fished, golfed and routinely swam across Pentz Lake and back each summer at “Camp”.
Throughout his life, Art encouraged and supported his children and grandchildren in their athletic, artistic, and personal endeavours, instilling in them values of perseverance and community. In retirement, he and Barbara embarked on many adventures: traveling to visit family, boating on St. Margarets Bay, swimming, walking, gardening, volunteering, and playing bridge together.
Art was a beacon of integrity, positivity, generosity, kindness, selflessness, and patience whose legacy of love, vibrant community involvement and unwavering support for his family and friends will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
