Born in Windsor, NS on January 6, 1923, Audree was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Moore) Barnes.
After finishing high school at Windsor Academy, Audree completed her 3-year nurses training at the Halifax Children’s Hospital (1943-46) and received her RN designation in 1946. She went on to obtain a Diploma in Public Health at Dalhousie University in 1951.
After completing her training, Audree went to work for the Halifax City Health Department where she was a District School Nurse and a District Supervisor (1951-57). Mom stayed at home to raise her children, and also to care for her ailing mother. She worked from home with the Private Duty Nurses Registry for a number of years. In 1972 she went to work as a doctor’s office nurse for Drs. MacGregor and Brown, and then for the Duffus Street Medical Centre, from where she retired.
Our mom was a caregiver by nature, always placing the needs of others ahead of her own. She was the best cook, and we always looked forward to Sunday dinners. She loved pets throughout her life and often asked us about our kitties. Until her later years when her eyesight was quite poor, mom loved to read, knit, and do crosswords and word searches. The thing she missed most in her final years was her sight.
Audree was a member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, and a member of the Mother’s Union. In 2015, she received her 60-Year Pin from her lodge, the Eastern Star Amethyst, Chapter 28.
Audree was a caring wife to her husband, Jason (Fergie) Ferguson from the time they married in 1953 until the time of his death in 1996. She was the best mother to her two daughters, Elaine (Ken) Boudreau and Lynn (Terry) Clarke. She was a proud grandmother to her four grandchildren, Laura and Kelly Boudreau, Jessica Richards, and Shelby Clarke. She loved to hear stories about her three great-grandchildren, Finn Masluk, Madeleine and Sophie Neal.
Besides her parents James and Margaret Barnes, Audree was predeceased by her husband, Jason (Fergie) Ferguson and her two brothers and their wives, Wallace (Irma) Barnes and Reigh(Louise) Barnes. Mom is the last surviving member of her immediate family and her circle of friends. We’re certain they were all waiting to welcome her home with open arms.
The family wish to express our gratitude for the compassionate care that the 4th floor staff at Arborstone Enhanced Care provided to our mom in her final years.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to JA Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS. Visitation will occur on Thursday, February 10, 2022 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. A private family burial service will follow. All visitors must adhere to Covid-19 protocols - masks are mandatory and proof of vaccine as well as photo ID will be required at Snows.
Mom, we were so blessed to have you and will miss you every day. You’re home now; rest easy.
