

Mahar, William Stroud “Bill” 84 of Halifax passed away peacefully November 10, 2016 at Melville Lodge after a long battle with Lewy Body Dementia, with his loving wife by his side. Born in Halifax, July 1, 1932 he was the son of the late Frank and Edith (Stroud) Mahar. He attended Halifax Schools and graduated from St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Bill was an avid golfer having been a member of Oakfield Golf and Country Club, Digby Pines and Grandview Golf Club. He spent many enjoyable summers at his cottage “Marvilla” in Smith’s Cove, Digby Co.
Bill was a very quiet and patient man who loved traveling and had many wonderful trips with wife Lorna to different parts of the world. He operated the family business Mahar’s Transfer Express LTD. until his retirement in 1987.
He is survived by his wife Lorna (Bell) Mahar of Dartmouth. Nieces Karen (Ken) Tucker and Suzanne Mahar; nephews, Michael (Holly) Mahar and Patrick Mahar. Sister-in-law, Beverley (John) Fahey of Fairport, NY and niece Heather (John) Stevens of Penfield, NY as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Besides his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother Frank and sister-in-law-Ruby.
Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Snow Funeral Home. Visitation for Bill will be held on Saturday November 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. from J.A. Snow Funeral Home with a memorial service to begin at 12:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia. Special thanks to Dr. Chris McKnight and to all the staff of Melville Gardens and Melville Lodge for the love, care and compassion for Bill over the last six years.
