Danny was born on June 17, 1947, in Hoi Ping, China but spent his childhood in Hong Kong with his siblings and extended family and worked with his father in the family tailor shop. His sister Carol encouraged him to travel to Canada with the hope of building a new life not afforded him in Hong Kong.
This life changing adventure brought him to British Columbia, Canada in 1974. After finding work with relatives, he sent for his wife-to-be Kit Kwan Wong and they married soon afterwards. His brother Joe then called for him and his brother Louis to travel to the East Coast to help with a restaurant in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
In 1976 Danny, his three brothers, Joe, Louis and Tat Chow and sister, Carol Lim started their own family restaurant, aptly named the Chow Family Restaurant, in downtown New Glasgow. Despite their success, in 1996, Danny decided to try and make it on his own and he and Kit bought the DownEast Restaurant, in Windsor, Nova Scotia.
Danny was a devoted husband, father and brother to his siblings. He was happiest when with his family, wife Kit, daughter May and son Andrew. Smiling and eating together was an immense pleasure for him. He was a man of few words but when he did share, it was from a place of thoughtfulness and patience. Hardworking, selfless and with a steadfast will towards his business and family, in 2007, Danny sold his now successful business and this man from humble and meager beginnings began a much deserved retirement with his wife in Halifax.
His childhood passion for soccer followed him into retirement and he played on a local team 3 times a week. He also enjoyed playing mahjong with close friends, and having ice cream on hot days. He and Kit joined a travel group and enjoyed going on cruises, having travel adventures and experiencing new places around the world. Danny more than succeeded in his hopes to provide a prosperous and secure life for his family. He was especially proud that he accomplished his goal of purchasing a Mercedes in his retirement.
Danny is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kit Kwan (Wong) Chow; daughter, May Chow; son, Andrew Chow and daughter-in-law Holly: and siblings, sisters Lai Hung (Chow) Jim, Carol (Chow) Lim, Man Wai Chow and his brothers, Louis Chow, Tat Chow; as well as many nieces and nephews and his in-laws on Kits side', the Hansen's.
Previously departed loved ones include his parents Sze Pak Chow, Yook Oi (Wong) Chow and his brother Joe Chow.
At Danny’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service as he wanted you to remember him as you knew him as he was, a stoic, loyal and hard working man that loved soccer and ice cream. In lieu of flowers and if you wish, donate to a charity of one’s choice or to Parkinson Canada.
