Charles Arthur Huskins "Charlie", of Hammonds Plains, born on November 10th, 1934, in West Green Harbour, Nova Scotia near Lockeport, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 31st, 2023, surrounded by his loved ones. Predeceased by his parents Arthur and Violet, siblings Ivan, Margery, Richard, and Vivian. He is from a large family and is the 2nd of 7 children.
He met his wife, Margaret of 69 years in West Green Harbour and followed his heart to follow her to BC.
Charlie leaves behind his 2 remaining siblings Marietta Scott and Murray Huskins and will be greatly missed by all, especially his wife Margaret, the love of his life for over 70 years, his five children, Judy, Cindi (Roy), Jim, Wendy (Sylvain), and Charlene. As well, his grandchildren, Kendra, Krystal (Chris), Sari (Colton), Ryan and Tyler. Along with his great grandchildren, Gabriel, Lance, Adam, Kelsey as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Charlie worked hard his entire life, at age 15 he worked in a fish plant for a nickel an hour. As a young adult, operated a gas station in Bedford across from the Chicken Burger. At that time Charlie and Margaret lived in the location of what is now known as the Ten Mile House. Soon after, they bought their home where they raised their family and still reside there today, in the Community of Bedford.
Charlie found his profession in the trucking and mobile home business, which is known as "Huskins Mobile Moving" with the slogan "Where Service Excels and Courtesy Dwells". He worked with many other companies in the same industry throughout the years. He loved the company of his employees and treated them as friends of the family. We all have fond memories of the office parties and events where Charlie supported but sat back and Margaret did all the planning.
Charlie included all of his children in special events and in later years he extended this to his grandchildren. He often had pet names for many of his children and grandchildren which raised a good chuckle in the family, as he was surprisingly quick witted and had a great sense of humour. He shared and passed on his skills and passion to his son over the years, who now operates this business.
The family business often had him on the road for long periods of time. When back home he and Margaret would pack up the 5 kids and head to West Green Harbour where we were all welcomed by Aunt Ebbie, Neppy, Tommy and Christine. This bond remained strong throughout the years and to this very day. Charlie loved being at the family homestead that he initiated clearing to be able to visit the area where he and his family grew up. Many times, a visit to this location is just what Charlie needed to restore his will and determination to “keep on trucking.”
There were many health professionals that did so much for Charlie. A special mention of Paulette, his home care person, who went that extra mile for him which created a trusting bond between them, and those efforts made all the difference.
Throughout the years with the many health challenges Charlie persevered with his will and determination, along with the help of health care professionals, and the love and support of all family. The wife and daughters of Charlie wish to make a special acknowledgment to his son, Jim for the commitment and devotion in providing his care. His dedication provided Charlie with the ability to enjoy his life at home. It has been their privilege to have the extra time and experiences to enjoy his life at his home, he worked so hard to provide and maintain.
Though at times, he was a little rough around the edges, Charlie aka, "Papa Bear", "Big Daddy", "Dad" or "Grandad" was a kind, loving and caring soul. We will miss him dearly and cherish the memories and experiences. He will be sorely missed by his closest family.
Throughout the many thoughts and comments over these past few days, his devoted and loving wife Margaret, sums it up beautifully...
"He was a really good guy".
Visitation will be held on Friday June 9th from 5:30 - 8:30pm with a funeral service on Saturday June 10th at 10am, all to take place in J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. Masks are requested by the family when embracing Charlie's wife Margaret.
