Peter was born on April 2, 1940 in Todmorden, England to Howard Joules and Lucy Joules (Whitehead). In 1964, he married Philomena Ryan. He became a doctor, graduating from the University of London in 1965.
Peter began his career as a general practitioner in the Isle of Man. After about a year, he and his young family moved to the Bahamas where he practiced as a flying doctor (no, he did not fly the plane), treating patients on many of the country's islands before setting up a family practice in Freeport.
In 1972 Peter, his wife, and two children immigrated to Canada. They eventually settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia where Peter pursued his passion for anesthesiology, graduating in 1979. He worked in various Halifax hospitals as an anesthesiologist and teaching doctor until his retirement in 2005. He loved his work in the operating room, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time and sharing knowledge with the residents.
In 1986, he married Joanne Casey, they had two children and 41 lovely years together until her death in 2025. They particularly enjoyed Peter's retirement years in their beautiful home in Mahone Bay.
Peter was known for his dry sense of humour, sometimes most amusing to himself. He loved tinkering with things to see how they worked, technology fascinated him. He developed an improvement on a piece of equipment he used in his work and he gave the patent for this invention to Dalhousie University. In addition, he learned about computer programming in the early days and developed a billing system that he and a number of his fellow doctors used. Peter was at his best when he was excited to share something
with you. He had a mischievous smile and a twinkle in his eye that warmed your heart. A love of books, genealogy, CBC, classical music, loooooong baths, afternoon naps and butter pecan ice cream (okay, any ice cream) filled a lot of his spare time. The rest of his time was filled with his love for his family. Despite the fact that he was non-demonstrative man, he needed and
thrived on the support of the people he loved, and genuinely did his best to do all that he could to make them happy. This loveable, complicated man will be missed.
He is survived by his sister, Helen Petrich, first wife, Philomena, his children, Richard Joules (Rion Microys), Tara Raymond (Jacques Raymond), Carla Joules-Spencer (Ryan Joules-Spencer), Ryan Joules (Christina Joules). He was “Poppy” to his seven grandchildren, Matilda, Agnes, Elizabeth, Alan, Elias, Hudson and Amélie. He was predeceased by his second wife, Joanne, his mother and his father.
