Clark Matthew Brown

BROWN, Clark Matthew - 95, of Halifax, died peacefully on Monday, May 6, 2013. Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, on March 4, 1918, he was the youngest son of the late James William and Mary Anne Brown, and was the last surviving sibling in a large and very loving family.

Clark loved his family, sports of all kinds, music, driving his car, camping and canoeing, a good joke, solving the Lexicon, chocolate covered almonds and Tim Horton's coffee with double cream.

Clark served as a sergeant in the Canadian Army in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia for the entire duration of WWII and thereafter settled in Halifax working at HMCS Dockyard for the remainder of his career. In 1959, he and Bernice moved their family to Spryfield where Clark was a very active member of the community, volunteering as a Boy Scout Leader and minor hockey coach and in his church as a choir member and as Treasurer of the St. Michael's Men's Society. He was much involved in the creation of the Halifax Horseshoe Club and was a Horseshoe Canada Hall of Fame member. He enjoyed skating, bowling, swimming, and singing with the Atlantic Swells Barbershop Chorus. At the age of 69 Clark participated as an Olympic Torch runner in Halifax for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. And at the age of 92 took up a new activity - watercolour painting.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years Bernice (Hartlin), his sons Clark (Mary Anne MacNeil), Doug (Janice Eisner), Terry (LaRita Zwicker), his daughter Elizabeth (Fred Fountain), his grandchildren Erin Brown (Mark Parsons), Luke Brown, Matthew Brown, Ashley Brown, Katharine Fountain, and his great-grandchildren Ashlyn and Rylan Parsons.

He was predeceased by his siblings Eva, Walter, Sarah, William, Tom, Jack, Frances, Gladys, Erin, Evangeline and Agnes and by his grandson Alex Fountain.

Visitation will be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Friday, May 10 from 6-8 pm.

A celebration of Clark's life will be held in St. Michael's Church, 14 St. Michael's Avenue, Spryfield, on Saturday, May 11, at 11 am.
