It is with deep sadness and loss, that we announce the peaceful passing of Claude Raymond Ténière, on January 1st, 2022. He passed away while at home surrounded by his family at the age of 88. Born June 11, 1933, in Paris, France, Claude is the son of the late Raymond Ténière and Renée (Vatin) Ténière.
Claude moved to Canada with his father in 1951 from France at age 18 followed shortly thereafter by his mother, younger brother and sister. He worked tirelessly to ensure his family had a good life in Canada. He was an electrician by trade and worked for Fairey Aviation where he discovered his love for airplanes. He said it was the best job he ever had. He then went on to spend most of his career working at the Halifax Dockyard. All while continuing his vocation as a public servant, he simultaneously undertook entrepreneurial pursuits. He founded his business, Ténière Electric Motor Repair, where he worked repairing motors for The IWK Health Centre. He was greatly respected and admired for his high-quality work and ability to fix anything. People often said: “If Claude can’t fix it, you might as well throw it out.”
Although a proud Frenchman, Claude loved Canada. He loved this country’s beauty and diversity. His most fond memories of Canada included the two cross-Canada trips he undertook. Once with his young family and again with his wife, Louise, later in life. Each time in the family’s beloved motorhome.
Claude always valued and put family first. He was a dedicated husband and father. The “Ténière” family often enjoyed gatherings where holidays and Sunday dinners were celebrated with great French cuisine, seafood and fine wines. While Claude’s heritage was from France, his wife Louise Richard-Ténière came from a large Acadian family. Although the “Richard” family referred to him as “le français [the frenchman]”, he was really an Acadian at heart. He fell in love with the Acadian culture and people. He and Louise enjoyed spending their summers at the cottage in Notre-Dame, New Brunswick, filled with family, laughter and wonderful music.
Claude is survived by his wife Louise (Richard) Ténière; daughters: Michèle Ténière-Close (Fred Close), Monique Ténière (Jamie Johnson); grandchildren: Anyssa Close, Selena Close; siblings: Jean Ténière, Françoise Bonnaud; nieces and nephews: Paul Ténière, Rene Ténière, Isabelle Guendouz, Philippe Bonnaud; and beloved family friend: Derek Mailman.
Due to COVID restrictions, there will be a private family memorial service by invitation only. Donations may be made to the IWK Foundation in Claude’s honour.
Claude’s family would like to extend a special thanks to Claire and the staff at Palliative Care and Continuing Care.
