Clive was an amazing talent, and a generous teacher. If you wanted to improve your on-air performance, he was a kind and patient mentor. He was the first journalist I met who wasn't afraid to challenge conventional wisdom.

My mother, Lil Hansen, and your mother, Mary, were very good friends in their teens and 20s.  Later on, when Clive arrived on the scene, my parents and Clive and Mary socialized often together with Nora and Abe, Shirley and Mike and others. I recall Clive's booming radio voice and Mary's laughter emanating from our living room during the many get-togethers my parents hosted.  Pretty much all of that gang of friends are gone now.  Clive was one of the last.  My condolences to you.  He was a great guy.

My sincere condolences to the Schaefer Family from Ken Lawrence who worked for 4 years with Clive at CHNS (1962-1966). Not only was he a work colleague during that time, we also became good friends and we kept in touch over the years. Given our mutually "conservative" views, we had a great time teasing our "liberal" friends, including the renowned Edmund Morris.
Clive and I agreed that the basics of being a good newsperson was a person's 
so-called "gut", as to what stories were of the most interest to listeners. I took that philosophy with me to Ottawa and 25 years covering national and international politics. He was simply "One of the Best Radio Newscasters Canada has ever had".

I remember working with clive on the election campaign in 1993.  he was a wonderful man.  thoughts and prayers are with the schaefer family at this sad time.

I remember the very early morning 31 years ago. The legend walked into the studio. All he said was "here you go kid". He handed me the weather, walked to the newsbooth...two studios over and read, the usual, well crafted, perfect cast. I was in AWE. He liked to share things "non-news" when he was off air. I was very sorry to learn that Clive has passed away.  I always enjoyed  Clive's friendliness and the conversations which I had with him on a variety of topics.  Even though I was just one of the many kids or teenagers who who passed through your doors, I always felt that Clive treated me with kindness and repect.  Please take care and be mindful that our thoughts are with you.

It is heartening to see the many responses remembering Clive and, especially, his influence on others.  It asserts the length of Clive's career and the many, many broadcasters who were associated with him.  One could not have had a better role model.  You could bet the bank on Mr. Schaefer; he was reliable, loyal and accountable.  With a talent that wasn't showy, he could do with excellence, any task to which he was assigned.  i think  part of the response to his death is that the fact that he was a constant for so long during a time when change became unsettling.
So, he would come to work all a-putter on his motor-scooter,    rip and read the news for the duration of his shift, commit  Time Magazine to memory ( part of his ammo when he entered into discussions on the issues of the day) and then scoot-off and play a few sets of tennis.

One cannot help but be moved by the wonderful tributes written here about Clive and his time at CHNS. Perhpas though, Jim David states it best, when he writes about the tremendous diversity of this man. I echo the remarks of all writers; Clive was a gentle man with a great sense of humour and a worldly awareness. We are all truly better for having known him.

I had the honour of working with Clive at CHNS in the late 80's and early 90's. . He was very special gentleman, and he will be missed.

I did not know Mr. Schaefer personally except to say listening to him in the '60's on CHNS and more recently at Parkland Estates specifically Drummond Hall, where he occupied a room close to the room my mother is in. I found him always to be the gentleman's gentleman. He entertained everyone on the floor with his charming personality and reminitions of days gone by. I for one will miss seeing him again but I know that once the pain of death has faded to the back of our memories we will be left with great memories of a wonderful man!

I consider myself lucky to have known and played beside Clive in the Tuesday Night Band Trombone section. He will be missed. My condolences to the family.

I have fond memories of Clive when I worked in the accounting dept at CHNS/CHFX.  There were very few days that Clive did not require proper change for the vending machine for his Mars Bar purchases....Always a class act.

I worked with Clive (88-96) and for awhile, lived in the same Clayton Park neighbourhood. In the spring and summers months I didn't need an alarm clock, instead I awakened when Clive started up his motorcycle. He was honest and forthright and, a true gentleman. He gave freely of his talents and time. As the old folk song suggests, "the only thing you can take is what you gave away ...." That being the case, Clive left this world a rich man.

I got to know Clive Schaefer quite well over the many years I spent working for CHFX the sister radio station of CHNS. He was always very professional and on top of just about any topic that you ever wanted to talk about and Clive could always be counted on to give his own opinion on most. That was one of the things I always admired about him. I had a great many chats with him over the years and enjoyed being around him because you could always learn something from him to improve yourself and he could always offer some advice to help you out to make youself better. It did not take long to realize that he was one of the best in the industry. He knew about world events, sports, music, business, politics etc. etc. etc. He was certainly an icon in the broadcasting industry for many years. He was the type of guy you always thought would be around forever. Condolences to Clives' family and friends. He will certainly be missed. R.I.P.Clive.

Had the pleasure of working with Clive from '81-'87. Really enjoyed debating the issues of the day with him. Didn't win very many of those discussions. Learned lots, though. Thanks Clive.

To all who passed through the hallowed halls of  MBC (CHNS-CHFX), Clive was iconic yet a humble man who set a high standard for fellow broadcasters. Many of us had heard or heard of him before joining the company. When I met him he was not the person I had imagined and over the years I learned there was so much more to Clive than his on air or broadcast persona.  Clive the family man, Clive the musician, Clive the community activist, Clive the tennis pro, Clive the cyclist, Clive the monarchist, Clive the volunteer and it goes on. Clive lived by setting an example and was a teacher and mentor to many. In these ways we will remember a long life, well lived and to those closest to him we offer our condolences at this sad time. I grew up listening to Clive do a superb job reading the news, and later worked alongside him at CHNS for four years, where he was always unflappable no matter the crisis, and full of interesting commentary on the news of the day (off the air!). I remember him telling me he had pulled my mother's (Margaret Foster's) pigtails when he sat behind her in school. He was a legend in broadcasting in Halifax and his passing marks the end of an era.

To me, Clive was an awsome tennis player. Even in his late years, when he no longer ran after every ball, when it came his way ~ it was guaranteed to be converted into a point.

When I worked at chns between 1965 and 1969, clive and i worked the morning shift. he encouraged me to challenge conventional wisdom, and to look at more than one source when writing a story.
he taught me lessons which i use to this day, more than 40 years later. May he rest in .peace.

i knew and worked with Clive 40 years ago. I worked side by side with him for nearly 5 years in the CHNS newsroom (72-76)
He was a gentleman, family man, great radio man, newscaster, tennis player (he beat me and I was 25 years younger), musician and english teacher.

Some of my best days were spent "discussing" with Clive.
