It is with saddened hearts that Mac’s family announces his peaceful passing on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Camphill Veterans Memorial Hospital, Halifax.
Born June 11, 1923, Mac was raised in Halifax, a son of the late Raymond Vincent and Dorothy (nee Forrestall) Martin.
Mac worked for Canadian National Railway for over 40 years as a representative.
Mac served in the Canadian Army during World War II and saw active service in Western Europe. He was proud to have served his country and always attended November 11 Remembrance Day ceremonies, with great emotion and sombre observance.
Mac was no stranger to heartbreak, losing his only birth daughter, Nancy Clair, at the early age of 11 to a kidney disorder and later, prematurely losing his first wife, Mary Delphine (nee Jordan). But Mac’s faith was strong and being a devout Catholic gave him strength and courage to carry on with life after his profound losses.
He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy (MacKenzie, nee Lockwood) and step children, Heather (Doug), Ian (Cathy), Donna (Andy), and Bruce, Mac’s sister Muriel Hessian, who has been by his side faithfully during his life and in his illness and passing; sisters, Ann (Connor), Elaine (Posiak) and brother, Gerald Francis and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles, Basil and Kenneth.
Mac came into the life of his stepchildren in 1980 and their lives were enriched by his kindness and love. He was the only grandfather known to David and Debi, who will always remember him with great affection. By example he demonstrated to his new family how to love, honour and overcome adversity.
Visitation to be held at J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, on Tuesday, April 26th from 6-8 pm. A private family service to be held later. Interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville, NS. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or Canadian National Institute for the Blind.
Mac’s family sincerely thank the staff of 5 West, Camphill Memorial Hospital for the ouststanding care and comfort extended to him in his 17 month stay.
