Dennis Alves Herx, 72, of Raytown, Missouri, USA and Falmouth & Halifax, NS, Canada, passed away on the July 16, 2021 after a resolute journey with cancer. He and his wife Michelle shared 49 loving years of marriage. Born in Junction City, Kansas, Dennis was the son of the late Alves J. and the late Blanche R. (Rackers) Herx.
After serving 3 years in the U.S. Army including one year in Vietnam, Dennis completed his university degrees at Towson State University and Gallaudet University graduating as a certified clinical audiologist. In 1977 he accepted a job in private practice audiology with Paul Kuttner of Audiology Associates, Halifax, and moved with wife, Michelle from Maryland to Nova Scotia. He became a partner in the practice a year later. After Paul’s death Dennis was joined by (the late) Jean Kienapple as a partner. Together they expanded the business to provide offices and hearing services throughout Nova Scotia and PEI with clinics in Newfoundland. He was later to become the sole owner of the practice which always focused on client care and highest quality service. Dennis was one of the founders of the national association for audiologists, The Canadian Academy of Audiology, in 1996. He earned his Doctor of Audiology (Au.D) degree in 2001, one of the first audiologists in Canada to do so.
Dennis’s life reflected his deep sense of spirituality and service to others. He was active in his Catholic faith and served in a variety of ministries through the years as a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Windsor, NS and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Halifax. Dennis loved sports including baseball, football and basketball and was proudly addicted to golf and his golf buddies. His sense of humour and quick wit gave him the name “Dennis the Menace” to those who knew him well. He enjoyed farm life and the great outdoors including camping, biking, hiking, travel and in recent years wintering in Florida. He and wife Michelle walked the 800 km Camino de Santiago in Spain in spring 2011. It was one of the greatest highlights of their life.
Dennis was a wonderful husband, father and family man. He is survived by: wife Michelle (Mathurin) Herx; his children Dr. Leonie Herx (Christian Laird) of Kingston ON, Justin Herx of Seattle, WA, USA, Andrew Herx (Deana Martin) of Kentville, NS; brother William Herx (Marva); sister Marilyn Scott (Don); sister Jackie Geisler (Carl); and grandchildren Elim, Asher, Niriah, Denis, Ephraim and Giovani Herx of Kingston, ON and Atira Martin of Kentville, NS; Dennis was predeceased by 2-month old son, Joseph W. Herx in 1980 and his sister Sheila Herx of Raytown, MO, in 2016.
Services: Due to Covid restrictions a private funeral by invitation will be held on July 31, 2021 at 11:00 am in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Halifax, NS, Canada.
