FRY, Donald Andrew – The family of Donald Andrew Fry are saddened to announce his passing on Friday, November 23, 2012 in Drummond Hall at Parkland Enhanced Care at the age of 85. Donald had a peaceful passing and was surrounded by his family. Donald was born in Halifax on October 16, 1927 and was the son of the late John Richard and Pauline Sarah (Lanigan) Fry.
Donald started his career path as a firefighter in the Canadian Air Force from 1946-1951. After leaving the Air Force he moved to California and worked at the Pacific Transport Steamship Line. Homesick for Halifax and his family he returned and started work in the accounting department for the Municipality of the County of Halifax. Donald left there to take a position of Assistant Manager of Public Works at the Halifax Housing Authority. He oversaw a number of public housing sites, including a complex in Spryfield, Mulgrave Park and the then newly constructed Uniacke Square. Don was very popular among the tenants; to him they were all his friends. He regretfully had to leave his position at the Housing Authority. He then started his own financial business, Central Bookkeeping Services Ltd. He and his wife, Pauline, ran the family business first from their home on Preston Street until moving it on to an office on Oxford Street. Don was then offered a position with Kings College as the University’s Bursar, which he accepted and worked for 15 years until his retirement in 1991.
Besides his wife Pauline and his family, Don’s other love was for his summer cottage retreat in Ketch Harbour. A place he had grown up spending his summers since the age of 2. His heart belonged to his Ketch Harbour cottage, his greatest pleasure.
Don met his wife, and love of his life, Pauline at the St. Thomas Aquinas Social Club. Many of their friends, whom they remain in close contact with, also met their life partners there.
Don was an incredibly kind and generous soul. He made friends with everyone he met and if one was lucky enough to be in his presence, they were made to feel special. He was the perfect gentleman. Always loving, always smiling.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 55 yrs, Pauline (Ashe) Fry; his children, son David (Patti Davis); daughters Margaret (Jim Malcolm) and Catherine (Rick Myers); his grandchildren John David Young, Julia Young and Nicole Myers; his sister Pat (Ken) Foran and his brother Tony (Cathy) Fry; and Pat White, a treasured friend who was like another son to Don.
Donald was predeceased by brothers: John, Frank, William and Peter, and sisters; Helen, Jean and Peggy.
``Uncle Don`` will also be sadly and fondly missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Heartfelt Thanks to Pat MacKay and the caring Staff at Drummond Hall, 3rd Floor, Parkland Enhanced Care and Special Thanks to the Staff and residents of the Gladstone Berkley.
