POWER, Donald James – 86, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2011 in Drummond Hall, Parkland Estates, Halifax. Born in Halifax on May 29, 1925 to the late Captain Nicholas L. Power MBE and Frances (McSweeney) Power.
He was educated in Halifax schools including St. Mary’s College and Nova Scotia Technical College which he graduated from in 1946 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. In June of 1946 he joined the NS Department of Highways and Public Works as a resident engineer in the Fairview Depot. In 1969 he was appointed Deputy Minister of NS Department of Public Works and retired from this position in 1984. He went on to manage the construction of the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building and was involved in the design of the new Infirmary Hospital until he decided to truly retire to the golf course in 1990. Over his working years he was also involved with the construction and Management Boards of many different projects including the Halifax Metro Centre, World Trade and Convention Centre and Dartmouth Sportsplex. Throughout his life, he always had a huge love of sports whether as a participant or spectator.
He leaves behind beloved friend and devoted companion Kathleen “Kaye” Chisholm; daughter Shirley-Ann, British Columbia; son Donald (Lynn); brothers, Nicholas C. Power (late Sylvia), William K. Power (Carol) and his sister Bernadette Rice (late Donald); grandchildren, Marc Power and Steven Power and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Shirley (Peebles) Power and his sisters Catherine Boucher (late Yvon), Clara Martin (late Eddie), Helen Sancton (late Authur) and Margaret Sheck (Conrad).
The family would like to truly thank all the staff on the 4th floor of Drummond Hall, Parkland Estates, Clayton Park for their compassion, understanding, diligence and friendship.
Visitation will be held Sunday, November 13th from 6-8 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home. 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Funeral Mass will be held Monday, November 14 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford St., Halifax. No reception, by request. Internment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Brain Injury Association of NS or the Alzheimer Society of NS.
