Born on West Bay Road, Cape Breton, Dorothy spent her life surrounded by family. She is survived by her husband of over 63 years, Donald, and her four children, Maureen (Randy), Michael (Christene), Monica (Rodney) and Mary, her eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who loved her very much. She was predeceased by her siblings Catherine Rose, Florence, Patricia (Patsy), James, Ronald, Dan, Alex, and Blaise, and her parents, James R. MacDonald and Elizabeth (Lamey) MacDonald.
She graduated from St. Elizabeth Hospital’s nursing school in North Sydney, Cape Breton, and soon after moved to Halifax. She initially moved into “Church Street” as a tenant, where she ended up meeting her loving partner in life, Don. After their marriage, they continued to live in the home as they raised their family. Dorothy spent the better part of her career working at the Halifax Infirmary, both as an R.N., and later in occupational health.
Dorothy, along with Don was a person of deep faith, serving in many capacities at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, and in the community at large. Dorothy loved fiercely, opening her heart and home to many over the years. She was a wonderful entertainer, with many enjoying her Sunday dinners. She maintained many close friendships including those she made later in life, which brought her great joy.
She was pragmatic to the end, believing how you showed up in life is what counted most. She was, and will continue to be, an inspiration for living a life of love, faith and humility. She will be missed dearly by her husband Donald, her family and many friends.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Cathedral Basilica, 5221 Spring Garden Road, Halifax. Reception to follow in the church hall. There will be no visitation, as was Dorothy’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, or a charity of your choice.
