Dorothy M. Moore, of Halifax, died on Wednesday February 14, 2018, 2 days following her 100th birthday. Dot (as she was known to most) was the daughter of John and Laura Casey. Her father was a railway employee who was tragically killed in his workplace during the Halifax Explosion on Dec. 6, 1917. Dot's mother and two older brothers lost their home on Kane St. as a result of the Explosion. This is the world into which Dot was born two months later on February 12, 1918. Dot grew up in the Hydrostone neighbourhood and attended schools in Dartmouth and Halifax, graduating from St. Pat's High School for Girls in 1933.
During the early years of the war, Dot met a handsome member of the British Merchant Marine at a dance at the Jubilee Boat Club. Sydney John Moore was a native of Cornwall, England. He was on a layover between trans Atlantic voyages. A whirlwind courtship ensued and John and Dot were married in March of 1943. After the war, John served for many years as a captain on cable ships operating out of Halifax. In 1950, John and Dot purchased a home on Deacon Street in Halifax where they brought up their family of three. Dot lived on Deacon Street until 2013 when she moved to an independent apartment in Cameron Hall at the Parkland Complex in Bayers Lake.
Dot commenced her work career at Crane's Department Store. While her children were young she was a representative for Avon and Welcome Wagon. Later she was employed as a school secretary within the City of Halifax School Board from where she retired. She was a long time member of the Armdale Yacht Club and the Waegwoltic Club. She and John enjoyed their trips back to England, their family summers at Shediac Beach N.B., and their many winters on Anna Maria Island, Florida.
Dot loved fashion and was still a smart shopper well into her 100th year. She was always impeccably dressed, never more so than at her 100th birthday celebration hosted last summer by her family.
Dot is survived by her daughter Joan (David) Wallace of New Glasgow; her son Syd (Kathleen) Moore of Halifax; and her daughter-in-law Georgina Moore of Victoria B.C. She was a very proud Granny to nine grandchildren: Chris (Erin MacKlem) Moore of Victoria B.C.; Laura (Neil) Bauder of Qualicom Beach B.C.; Tom (Anise Barton) Wallace of Kamloops B.C.; Sarah (Patrick Reid) Wallace of Vancouver; Daniel (Hilary) Wallace of Halifax; Lyndsay (Jay) Aird of Halifax; Christie (Greg Wisener) Moore of Ottawa; Ryan Moore and Sean Moore both of Halifax. She also leaves behind ten great grandchildren: Attlee Moore, Olin Bauder, Xavier and Feron Wallace, Gabrielle and Cameron Reid, Caroline and Eloise Wallace, Benson and Ray Aird.
Dot was predeceased by her parents and her brothers Jack and George. Her husband, John, passed away in 2002 and her son Scott died in Victoria in 2013. She was also predeceased by great granddaughter, Sydney Reid, in 2010.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday July 18, 2018 at 11:00am in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax . The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Abbey Lane Hospital (9th floor) for the excellent care provided to Dot in her final days. Donations in Dot's memory can be made to The Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of one's choice. To leave on-line condolences, please visit: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
