Doug was the only child of Lamont and Verna (Hume) Hodges. He is survived by his much loved and loving wife of 67 years, Elaine (McCully) Hodges, son Philip Hodges (Colin Crombie), grandsons Shawn and Ryan Hodges, their mother Margaret (Dickson) Hodges, great-grandsons Theo and Hollis Hodges, and many extended relations. He was predeceased by his son David Hodges in 2021.
A true Haligonian, Doug was born, educated and lived all of his life in the city. His entire career was as an employee of the Maritime Tel & Tel Company where he enjoyed the work and social life that came with the “phone company” in the early days. He was also active in the Telephone Pioneers following his retirement.
A labour of love for Doug was collaborating with his father to build, and then maintain, the much-loved family “Camp” in Tantallon on the shore of St. Margaret’s Bay. He and Elaine were able to spend some special summer days there until recently.
Doug’s love of music and willingness to share this love was a defining characteristic. He played numerous instruments but will perhaps best be remembered for playing his accordion and singing, always singing.
The family would like to thank Heather and Lori-Ann, true angels, for their loving care over the past two and a half years.
There will be a private service with later interment in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax. For those wishing to make a donation in memory of Doug, please consider the War Amps or the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation.
