He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Mildred – Millie, daughter of John Angus and Loretta Campbell, and sister-in-law Stella (Vince) Campbell. Duncan & Millie were devoted to each other and together they had eight children and 18 grand children and 6 great grand children. He is survived by all of his children, and will be dearly missed by Millie and the family: Patricia Maccagno (Hugh) - Halifax, Donna - Ottawa, Bruce (Sheillach)-Halifax, Linda Oliver (Senator, Donald) - Ottawa, Lauranna Pridham (Fred) - Kingston, Lorne (Lorraine) - Timberlea, Robert (Susan) – Herring Cove and Loretta MacNeil (Alvin) Timberlea.
He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Alec Dan, Murdock, James, (Inverness) and Thompson (Boston) and his sisters Lauranna MacDonald (North Carolina) and Peggy Long (Boston). Duncan remained close to the many nieces and nephews and their families and often hosted the American cousins in Inverness.
He retired in 1978 from the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission where he was General Manager of the Mail Order and Licensee businesses and enjoyed his many years of retirement. Duncan and Millie were active in lawn bowling and Duncan represented Nova Scotia on three occasions at the Canadian Championships in doubles or fours, always with great teammates and friends. He was active in St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and as a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, Council 1097. He gave generously of his time to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which helps the homeless, the sick and the poor, often delivering food and aid to families in crisis. He did his work quietly and with compassion.
He cherished democracy and followed politics closely. He revered Robert Stanfield and always advocated for fairness, good government and good financial management. He was ever the optimist.
Duncan had a lifelong interest in Cape Breton and Celtic culture and appreciated fiddle tunes and players of all ages. He was a charter member and past president of the Cape Breton Club of Halifax. His book My Life on Margaree Island, written as a collection of memories, was well received by many who read it, much to his delight. He grew up speaking Gaelic on Margaree Island where his father Angus Y, a celebrated bard, was lighthouse keeper. Duncan enjoyed speaking Gaelic throughout his life, especially on trips back to ancestral highland Scotland and along the Distillery Trail.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at St. Theresa’s Church, 6351 North Street, Halifax at 10:00 am on Monday September 13th with Father Lloyd O’Neill presiding. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, people are encouraged to make a donation to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, or a charity of your choice.
