

Died peacefully in Halifax, NS, on May 26, 2013, surrounded by her family. Edith Peppard Hawkins, daughter of the late Senator Charles Gerald Hawkins and Nellie Clair (Wright) Hawkins, was born October 2, 1927, in Shubenacadie, NS. She was brought up in Milford Station, NS, attended Dalhousie University, class of 1947, and lived at Shirreff Hall, where she made lifetime friends. Upon graduation, she worked for the Nova Scotia Department of Public Welfare. She subsequently attended McGill University, graduating in social work, and was then employed at the Family Services Agency in Verdun, QC. She returned to Halifax and was employed at the Maritime School of Social Work, supervising students. Following her marriage to J.W.E. (Bill) Mingo, she became a stay-at-home mother to five children.
Edith became involved in community agencies, and served on the boards of the Junior League, the Halifax United Way, the Children’s Aid Society, the Family Welfare Association, the Halifax Assistance Fund, the Halifax Protestant Infants’ Foundation, and the Scotia Festival of Music. With her husband Bill, and her brother George Stewart Hawkins, she helped manage Riversdale Lumber Co., which was founded by her father. She also served terms as an elder of St. Matthew’s United Church.
Edith was predeceased by her parents, her brother George, and her husband Bill Mingo. She is survived by her children: Sally (JP Camus), Halifax; James (Jill Jeffery) Kingston, Ontario; Johanna, Toronto; Nancy (Spencer Overgaard-Thomsen), Toronto; and Charles, Halifax; and by seven grandchildren: Tristan and Sébastien Camus, Alexandra and Iain Mingo, Anne, Simon and Claire Overgaard-Thomsen, and by her steadfast caregiver, Odessa Godbold.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, May 30 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM] at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, NS. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 31, at 11:00 AM at St. Matthew’s United Church, 1479 Barrington Street, Halifax. The family would like to express its deepest appreciation for all those who cared for Edith. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
