

Edwin Joseph Holmes died at the age of 98 on April 22, 2013 at Cameron Hall, Parkland, Clayton Park, following a brief illness. Born in Halifax, he was the son of the late Edwin Charles Holmes and Adelaide (Coakley Holmes) Macdonald. He was educated at Bloomfield High School and a graduate of the Halifax Academy. He was employed as a supervisor with the N.S. Light and Power Company and the N.S. Power Corporation for 35 years until retirement in 1977. In earlier years as a Boy Scout, he was a King Scout, was awarded the prize for Knowledge of Forestry by the Department of Lands and Forests and was involved in the Boy Scout Movement as a leader. He worked with the St. John Ambulance Society and received the Gold Medallion and Bar. He was a recipient of the Queen’s 25th Anniversary Medal in 1977. He was a long time member of the Waegwoltic Club and the former Oxford Street United Church. Edwin is survived by loving daughters, Janet (David) Connolly of Eastham, Mass. and Vero Beach, Fla.; and Carole-Anne Holmes-Lauder of Saint John, N.B.; loving grandchildren, Michael (Marcia) Connolly of Eastham, Mass.; Katherine (Eric) Charest of Vero Beach, Fla.; Edwin Holmes-Lauder, Monica Holmes-Lauder Wang of Saint John, N.B. and Michael Holmes-Lauder of Fredericton, N.B. and loving great-grandchildren, Nicole and Alexander Charest of Vero Beach and Keaghan Li Wang of Saint John. Mona Lillian (Mackey), his loving wife of 69 years predeceased him in September 2009. His stepfather, John P. Macdonald, O.B.E. and sister, Adelaide Ross also predeceased him. Family flowers only. Edwin was known for always being a gentleman. He will be remembered for his knowledge and quick wit, and for being thoughtful and kind. A memorial donation may be made to a charity of one’s choice, or an act of kindness performed in his memory. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Visitation will be Thursday, April 25, 2013 from 4 – 8 pm with the funeral service on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 2:00pm. Private family burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville. Edwin’s daughters extend heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents of Cameron Hall, Parkland Estates for their care and kindness, and very special thanks to his caregiver Glenda Hibbs.
