Eileen was born in London, England, on the 10th May 1923 to Florence and Herbert Tomkins. She was the third child of four children – two boys and two girls. Eileen was brought up in North London, before the family moved in 1939 to Bath , Somerset. This was due to the transfer from London of some of the Civil Service Departments. In 1947, while also working for the Civil Service, she met and married her future husband, Peter, who had been working there for the Admiralty as part of the war effort.
They moved from Bath to Erith in Kent before moving to Dartford in 1961, where her two children, Marilyn and Michael, attended senior schools. The Devonshire Avenue house was a much loved home and the family have many happy memories of lazy summer days in the large, peaceful garden there. It was also an excellent base for dingy sailing on the Isle of Sheppey and many weekends in the summer would be spent literally “messing about in boats”.
After an extended period of work for Peter at the RSAF Enfield and PA Management Consultants, a decision was made in 1983 to move with Peter’s work from Dartford to Barnsley in Yorkshire. Several years were spent there before full retirement for them both in Scalby, near Scarborough. The family visited often and very much enjoyed the large garden and close proximity to both the seaside and the wonderful North York Moors. “The Good Life” was very much the theme in Scalby and large quantities of fruit and vegetables were grown and consumed! Eileen was a very good cook.
While in early retirement in Scalby and still with a very active mind, Eileen ably supported the Scalby Fair Committee and the local Women’s Institute. In addition she completed a substantial number of superb sewing and tapestry items. Many of these items complemented the furniture and woodwork being produced by Peter in his workshop. These will be treasured for many years to come by all members of the family.
After the Peter’s untimely death at the age of 72 in 1996, she made the decision in 2001 to move to be near her daughter, Marilyn, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This was a major upheaval for her, but she settled well into her large condominium and certainly enjoyed life with the ever growing Allen family.
Married to Peter for very nearly 50 years, the support they both offered the family over the years was exceptional. She always gave sound advice and guidance to all members of her family based on her broad experience of life in general, blended with a lot of common sense!
Eileen died after a short illness and is survived by her daughter Marilyn, son Michael, five granddaughters and five great grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by them all.
By Eileen’s request, cremation has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
