Born in Saint John, NB. She was the daughter of James and Lillian (Chambers) Gillis, Betty studied nursing at Western University at London, ON, and Obstetrics at Boston Mass and later received her diploma from the Halifax Infirmary. As an RN she volunteered at Pier 21, assisting the new war brides entering Canada.
Betty was the founding organizer for the Figure Skating Program for the Special Olympics in Halifax, and later became very involved with the Track And Field and Bowling programs.
Survived by son, Douglas (Anne); daughters, Elizabeth, Suzanne (Greg Varga); grandson, Douglas Joseph “DJ”, Robert; sister, Helen and many nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by husband of 51 years, Douglas J Flemming; sister Moira, Josephine, Veronica, Theresa. Visitation will take place at J. A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax (455-0531) on Monday, October 14, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Funeral on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at 10:00 am in St Agnes Church, Mumford Road Halifax.
