It is with heavy hearts we share the loss of our kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Betty, 81, of Halifax passed away on December 29, 2017 in Maplestone Enhanced Care with her family by her side. Born in Halifax on August 2, 1936, she was the only child of Sidney and Hilda Regan. Betty is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Ken, Halifax; her daughters Katherine (David) Gouchie, Yellowknife; Karen (Sylvanus) MacLeod, Dartmouth; and son Kevin, Truro; grandchildren Kristen (Noam) Ami, Toronto; Lauren Gouchie (Michael Fleming), Ottawa; Jennifer Mantin (Jacob Curry), Truro; Scott Gouchie, Edmonton; Jeffrey Mantin (Emily Peters), Truro; Sarah Mantin, Truro; and great granddaughter Teresa Mae Curry, Truro. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her stepfather William Doherty and daughter-in-law Teresa Mantin.
Raised in Halifax, she was educated at Oxford School and the Convent of the Sacred Heart, graduating in 1955. As a devoted mother, Betty put her working career on hold until her three children were all attending school when she began working for the Royal Bank in Ottawa. Upon the family’s return to Halifax, Betty worked as an educational assistant at Oxford School, followed by a 20 year career as secretary at St. Theresa's Parish until her retirement in 1999.
Betty was a woman of deep faith, active in both the church and community. In 1996 Betty was the recipient of the Archdiocese of Halifax Medal for her many years of dedicated volunteer service to the Archdiocese. For more than 50 years she belonged to Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, making many lifelong friends and receiving a Lifetime Membership Award. Betty was an avid reader, enjoyed travelling and spending time in Florida and at the cottage in Bridgewater. She was a great baker and cook and loved to entertain, especially at Christmas. She was happiest when surrounded by family, most importantly her grandchildren, whom she adored. Betty lived her life doing for others and will be remembered for her kindness and the care and concern she had for all.
Having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease Betty was a resident of Maplestone Enhanced Care for the past seven years. Although this disease stole so much from her, Betty’s spirit was not lost. Her positive presence brought light to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her gentle and kind personality, her peaceful manner and her warm loving smile.
The family extends a special thank you to the wonderful team of doctors, nurses and staff at Maplestone for the love and compassionate care given to Betty and our family, especially during her final days.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 6 – 9 p.m. in J. A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 6, 10:00 a.m. at St. Theresa’s Parish, 6351 North Street, Halifax with Father Mark Cherry officiating. Reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will take place at a later time in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Betty’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.

All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.”
