George Curtis -May 18, 1919 to April 18, 2020, has moved on to the Great Putting Green four weeks short of his 101 birthday. His departure was sudden and peaceful: but can’t say unexpected once you have already reached the amazing milestone of an active and healthy 100 years.
George loved golf and for the past 40 yrs spent the golf season on the fairways of Brightwood Golf Course, playing golf up to his birthday last year. In his younger days he loved to go hunting. Every November for 30 yrs he and his same four buddies would head to Cape Breton to a cabin they built in Meat Cove. The hunting only stopped once his granddaughter tearfully explained they were leaving baby deer like Bambi without a mother. George loved playing cards and always enjoyed his weekly card games with the group at Brightwood. George was a lifelong bowler; his first league was the CNR Mixed League. George and Margaret spent the summers of his retirement years camping in their travel trailer at the Plantation in the valley and many summers “snow birding” with their trailer to Florida.
George was born and raised in Musquodoboit Harbour and a favourite childhood memory was jumping the ice flows in winter and going home wet and cold to a scolding from his Mom, George went on to work for the CNR and retired from VIA after 39 yrs. He chose to turn down further promotions and retire early so he and Margaret could remain near and be an active part of their grandchildren’s lives. He certainly got his money’s worth from his pension being retired 40 yrs, 1 year longer than he worked.
George was pre deceased by his mother Martha Broomhead (of Leigh Lancashire England) and father Panagiotis Kourtis (of Athens, Greece). His parents meet on the ocean liner Megantic, on their way immigrating to Canada. As they passed through Pier 21 his father’s name was changed by immigration to Peter Curtis.
He is predeceased by Margaret (Smith), his wife of 49 year and Hank (Henrietta) Sampson, his second wife of 2 years. George is also predeceased by sisters Lydia Graves, Helen Basset, Elizabeth Day and brother, Peter Curtis.
George is survived by his son Bernie (Lynette) Prospect Bay; grandchildren Leslie (Derek) in Truro, Brandy (Kevin) in Moncton and Chris (Cliff) in Hatchet Lake, his great grandchildren Mason, Sydney, Adrian and Casey; niece Margie Rogers (Gerald) in Portuguese Cove and grand niece Donna in Hatchet Lake.. and many more nieces and nephews.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place with no visitation. His family will place his ashes beside Margaret at a future time.
